ANC paying the price for deepening inequality- February

Senior analyst at the Institute of Security Studies, Judith February, analysed the way Wits and UJ students marched to Luthuli House to speak to ANC officials.

February said politicians have been caught off guard by the movement.

Massive crowds of protesting students descended on the African National Congress’ (ANC) Luthuli House headquarters, demanding that government takes their fight for zero fee hikes seriously.

Students refused to let him address them instead they gave him a memorandum to sign.

February said it's welcomed that the protests have in a way moved to the seats of power.

It shows a leadership that is out of touch and is now paying the price for the deepening levels of inequality and the lack of accountability.

Earlier, Associate Editor at Daily Maverick, Ranjeni Munusamy, said it seems there is buck passing and no one is taking responsibility for the #FeesMustFall campaign.

She was speaking to Azania Mosaka on the Azania Mosaka Show.

Munusamy noted that it was important for the African National Congress to show leadership.

They needed to be there and speak to the students. Even if they would have been booed and not given a chance to speak, they needed to be there.

She said leaders can’t keep hiding behind the police lines.

“They [ANC] disengage further and further from the constituencies that voted them into power and that is dangerous for the party and the country.”
