I was just looking at the wires, and I see that Sam Meyiwa, Senzo Meyiwa’s father, has spoken to the media. He says that he just wants the men who killed his son arrested as soon as possible, he told the media “they must make sure they get to these people who killed my son, I want them in jail, I want them in custody, I want to talk to them and find out why they killed my son".
Broken, Meyiwa admits that he is still battling to comprehend that his son is dead - "I don’t know if I am coming or going, my heart is finished."
It’s just a difficult situation to comprehend unless you’re part of the family.
I was speaking earlier about the various press conferences that took place today, including the one with Shakes Mashaba, Kaiser Motaung, Dennis Mumble and Dr Irvin Khoza. Personally I was listening to thaty and I couldn’t hold back the tears, it just said to me that there is something fundamentally wrong with our society.
There is something fundamentally wrong in cutting short such a life. The life of a footballer who has waited for his turn, who has been patient while he had to play second fiddle to goal keepers in the national team and in his club, Orlando Pirates, but he never went off the rails.
Here’s my call this afternoon, I would like to call upon all professional PSL players to use their networks to identify, isolate and make sure the killers are identified and apprehended.
Secondly, this incident makes it clear that crime does not discriminate – let’s use these very same networks to rally and mobilize our communities to be vigilant crime fighters.
I’m particularly appealing to all PSL team, especially Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates – let’s see the support that these teams have in the community come through by these criminals being apprehended tonight!
