Govt to work with universities to bridge fee increment gap

Wits University vice chancellor Adam Habib says the government will work together with universities to bridge the gap left by the 0% fee increment.

President Jacob Zuma announced that following a meeting held with ministers, university management and student leaders; there will no fee increases for 2016.

This follows nearly a week of protests from a Fees Must Fall movement of students across the country who demanded that institutions scrap all the proposed fee increases.

Habib says the president and university management listened to the students’ grievances and looked into the long-term effect of the 0% increment.

At the same time Minister in the Presidency Jeff Radebe says as government they are committed to quality education and finding solutions to issues raised by students so far.
