Nzimande: Free education is feasible, provided that there is money

Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande said approximately R3 billion is needed to fund the 0% fee increment for 2016.

The minster also dismissed allegations that he withheld a report that found free university education was viable.

According to Nzimande, the report had been presented to the relevant stakeholders, including the National Treasury, denying that government had not been transparent, as some reports claim.

He discussed university autonomy and the #BladeMustFall calls, which have questioned his competence and proposed for him to step down as minister.

Listen to the full conversation from The John Robbie Show:

That is a very malicious article and I reject it emphatically. The contents of the report was presented to the decision makers. Why would I sit on that report? It was never a secret. The report concluded that free education is feasible, provided there is money.

Blade Nzimande, Higher Education Minister

Nzimande said he rejected the blame that has been placed on him and his department amid the #FeesMustFall campaign.

He said he refuses to take blame for the fact that government does not have money to offer free education.

The minister added that he believes there is enough money in the country, the problem is not enough of it is in government.
