Why are Wits University's students still protesting?

Classes are still on hold at Wits university even after President Zuma announced that there will not be fees increase for 2016. Students are now demanding an end to out-sourcing at the university.

Stephen Grootes spoke to Eye Witness News Gia Niccoalides about why are students still protesting.

According to Niccoalides, students are still calling for free education amongst other demands that they have put in a memorandum and they want those issues addressed immediately.

Listen to the full conversation below:

Meanwhile, Wits University Vice Chancellor Adam Habib says he’s disappointed that students want to continue their protests.

Habib said the ongoing protests could jeopardise the academic future of many who can’t afford to repeat the year.

According to Habib, the other concerns raised by students, such as outsourcing and the curriculum, could be addressed by the university.

I do want the academic programme to be on track. All of those other demands are imminently addressable within the university. We are prepared to sit down and talk with them.

Adam Habib, Wits University Vice Chancellor

Listen to the full conversation from The John Robbie Show:

Habib said he has called a senate meeting to deliberate whether or not to resume the academic programme.
