Why the DA decided to dismiss Dianne Kohler Barnard

The Democratic Alliance (DA)’s Federal Executive has decided to terminate DA MP, Dianne Kohler Barnard’s membership following a disciplinary process over a Facebook post that was calling for the return of PW Botha, in what has been described Mmusi Maimane’s biggest leadership test.

702's John Robbie spoke to the party's national spokesperson, Phumzile Van Damme, about the party's decision.

Kohler Barnard has expressed intent to appeal her termination, according to Van Damme.

DA mum on sanctions proposed by federal legal commission

Kohler Barnard had pleaded guilty in September to misconduct, bringing the party into disrepute and not abiding by the party’s social media policy.

The Federal Executive of the DA allegedly grappled with the sanctions to impose on the shadow minister.

Van Damme said the party could not disclose the various sanctions proposed by the federal legal commission.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

Kohler Barnard was found guilty of misconduct by the DA’s Federal Executive on Friday.

The DA’s federal executive consists of Maimane as party leader, Helen Zille in her capacity as former national leader, the party’s nine provincial leaders, federal chairperson Athol Trollip, three deputy federal chairpersons and members of the federal council.
