'Appealing Oscar Pistorius' conviction a waste of taxpayer money'

State prosecutors will today argue that Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius should be found guilty of murder and sentenced to a minimum of 15 years behind bars.

The legal argument is expected to be heard in front of the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.

Kelly Phelps, senior public law lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT), said millions in taxpayers' money has been spent unnecessarily on the high profile case, while many lesser known cases remain unconcluded.

Listen to the full conversation from CapeTalk's Breakfast with Kieno Kammies:

It is disappointing that the State actually pursued this appeal, in light of the fact that they achieved a conviction in this case, though it was not the conviction they were hoping for.

Meanwhile, attorney Tyrone Maseko says the appeal case is a matter of technicalities.

The testimonies were problematic. There are technical issues. Is this a case of fact or law, and should we even be here?

A panel of five judges will hear the arguments from the State and defence, with the proceedings scheduled to last one day.

Pistorius has been living at his uncle Arnold Pistorius’ Pretoria home for the past two weeks after being released on parole and placed under house arrest.

The disgraced Paralympic sprinter was found guilty last year of culpable homicide after shooting dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of February 14 2013.
