Miners Shot Down Emmy award: 'A victory for those who have lost loved ones'

The battle for justice continues for Marikana miners despite the international spotlight surrounding the massacre.

Meanwhile, the documentary film 'Miners Shot Down' has won top honours at the International Emmy Awards.

Since its public release in 2014, Rehad Desai’s haunting film has both received critical acclaim and made a strong impact on viewers overseas, though not aired by local broadcasters.

Stephen Grootes spoke to filmmaker, Rehad Desai about if he thought the film stood a chance, as well as the difficulty to get SABC to screen it.

Marikana is 'a turning point'

Redi Tlhabi spoke with Andries Nkome, the lawyer for Marikana miners and Rehad Desai, the filmmaker and activist who directed 'Miners Shot Down'.

Listen to the full conversation from The Redi Tlhabi Show:

19 miners have been charged for the deaths of two police officers, two security guards and six miners prior to the massacre on August 16 2012.

Nkome said prosecutors have not provided case dockets explaining the various charges and identifying the suspects.

We've argued from the beginning that a new list of accused be established. In our books, accused number one is Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa among others. The NPA has not made contact to hear our inputs.

The NPA says a pre-trial conference will take place in December to finalise criminal proceedings against Marikana miners who have now been charged.
