Dr Schomer: The importance of speaking your mind

'Groupthink' occurs in many situations where people gather to make decisions, according to Dr Helgo Schomer.

He says it is when a group values coherence over accurate analysis and critical evaluation.

Groupthink is where critical thinking, opinion expressed against the trend is not tolerated. It is where communication is limited, information gathering is not open – it is actually biased.

Dr Schomer also spoke about what is called ‘mind guard’ (enforced behaviour) which he says it is not good because it channels the thinking of the group members and demonises opposing views.

The best debates are when people are open, relaxed and can express themselves, when it is limited the decision outcomes are usually disastrous.
