ANC and IEC in tug of war

ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe and his deputy, Jessie Duarte reportedly referred to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) as "the enemy".

The two allegedly verbally attacked Terry Tselane, IEC vice-chairperson, at a dinner that was held after the election results were released.

Paul Berkowitz, Director at EDGIS says he is not that surprised that these reports are coming out, and that after the local government elections, there were reports of friction between ANC and IEC. In fact, Mantashe has called for the electoral system to be reassessed.

Most observers agree that the IEC held good, free and fair elections, says Berkowitz. He says the IEC has measures in place to prevent fraud occurring such as double blinds and processes that need to be confirmed by the parties before the results may be made public.
