TECHNOBYE: Snapchat, Google and Twitter all making changes

The company synonymous with disappearing messages wants to build more than just software for your phone. Snapchat's new ambition begins with Spectacles -- a pair of funky sunglasses with a built-in wireless video camera.

Snapchat announced its first-ever hardware product Saturday, calling Spectacles a "totally new type of camera" because it records videos from "the human perspective."

Snapchat also changed its official company name to Snap Inc. The camera in Spectacles has a 115-degree field of view, which is wider than that of a normal smartphone camera, located on the frames near the left eye.

Google South Africa today announced the launch of Google Allo to the South African market.

Announced at the Google I/O Developer conference in May, Allo is a smart messaging app that works off your phone number and is available for Android and iOS mobile devices.

Allo is not like other messaging apps, that just let you chat to friends, family and colleagues, it’s much smarter. What makes it smart (amongst other things) is that it features a preview version of Google Assistant, which you can chat to one-on-one or in group conversations, by typing @google.

This means when you’re trying to decide where to go for dinner with your bestie, for example, you can @google right in the chat and it’ll help you research and book a dinner spot. allo.google.com

Twitter has initiated talks with several technology companies to explore sell, according to a source, signalling the start of what is likely to be a slow-rolling auction of the high-profile but money-losing social media company.

A sale of Twitter has been the subject of on-again, off-again rumours for many months as the company grapples with stagnant user growth, soft advertising sales and losses running at hundreds of millions of dollars a year.

The company's business struggles have come even as the 10-year-old service has evolved into a potent global source of news, entertainment and social commentary.

CNBC, citing anonymous sources, reported on Friday that Twitter is in talks with companies including Google and may receive a formal bid soon. A source told Reuters that Salesforce.com is also in pursuit.
