Motsoeneng's alleged R11.4m bonus is 'looting' at the SABC - SOS

Lobby group SOS Coalition says that the SABC board's alleged decision to pay embattled Hlaudi Motsoeneng a bonus of R11.4 million is a slap in the face to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Last week, a court ruled that Motsoeneng cannot continue as chief operating officer (COO), but there’s still no confirmation about the role he is playing at the broadcaster since then.

It's alleged that Motsoeneng was awarded the bonus after brokering a major deal between pay operator MultiChoice and the SABC.

This is allegedly the first of three tranches that Motsoeneng will receive from the broadcaster.

SOS Coalition's Kate Skinner says that the SABC board is allowing for the looting of the SABC by not consulting all the board members regarding the payment of the bonus.

The SABC board is being mad and basically saying we don't care and aren't prepared to follow proper legal process.

Kate Skinner, SOS Coalition co-ordinator

Skinner believes that cracks are starting to show at the SABC, after board member Krish Naidoo broke ranks and called for the National Treasury to intervene.

She says that Motsoeneng clearly has support from President Jacob Zuma, Communications Minister Faith Muthambi and the SABC board chair.

According to Skinner, the MultiChoice is controversial because it gives the company exclusive rights to the SABC's archives.
