Illegal mine rescues are high risk - Chamber of Mines
Chamber of Mines has shared information about their medical rescue operations and how they deal with illegal mining.
Chamber of Mines spokesperson, Charmane Russell, says they put the information together to show the kind situations rescuers come across when saving trapped illegal miners.
Two weeks ago illegal miners, also known as zama zamas, were trapped underground at the Langlaagte mine shaft.
Many of these abandoned mines do not have plans in place. They have also not been maintained for many years. They also do not have the levels support that we have in place today. So, it is extremely difficult for rescue operators in this case.Charmane Russell, Chamber of Mines spokesperson
Russell says no organisation can stop illegal mining on its own.
Illegal miners themselves are not necessarily the root of the problem. This is very highly organised syndicated operation in many cases where international syndicates are involved.Charmane Russell, Chamber of Mines spokesperson
