SA's youth unemployment rate a 'national emergency' - Gordhan

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has described South Africa's high youth unemployment rate as a national emergency.

Gordhan was speaking at the Accelerating Inclusive Youth Employment conference outside Stellenbosch on Tuesday.

EWN's Ilze-Marie Le Roux reports that members of the public and private sector gathered to discuss how to eradicate barriers to employment.

Gordhan applauded government’s youth employment initiative, which aims to place one million young people into paid intern positions over the next three years.

The high youth unemployment rate was attributed to lack of work experience, job-readiness and a poor education system, among other things.

This, combined with the country's 0% growth rate, only makes matter worse for the economy, explains Le Roux.

According to Stats SA’s quarterly survey, the country's unemployment rate is 37.5% for people between the ages of 15-34 in the second quarter of this year.

Gordhan has called on the private sector to collaborate with government, and pool their resources to address the issue.
