Citizens of the world agree; Deutschland ist wunderbar!

Germany – home of the soccer world cup and destroyer of Brazil, frugal leader of a continent drowning in debt, champion of internet freedom – is the most respected country on Earth, according to the Nation Brands Index, compiled by research firm Anholt-GfK and independent policy advisor Simon Anholt.

To compile the ranking of 50 countries, Anholt-GfK asked 20 000 people throughout the world questions on 23 qualities across six categories (exports, governance, culture, people, tourism and immigration/investment).

“Germany unseated the US by winning the World Cup and by virtue of its perceived leadership in Europe through a robust economy and steady political stewardship," said Simon Anholt.

Winning the World Cup can do wonders for your reputation.

South Africa is the most admired country in a not-so-admired Africa

South Africa is the most well-regarded country in Africa. Overall it comes in at 37th, closely followed by Egypt (38th) while Kenya and Nigeria ranks right at the bottom.

South Africa’s most favoured characteristic is, as in the past, it’s vibrant and ultra-diverse cultures while governance is its weakest link.

Most people of the world view South Africa as phenomenally beautiful, athletically powerful, rich in heritage and very friendly.

Germans, Brits, Indians and Italians were the most favourable in their opinions about South Africa.

South Africans were mostly favourable to their home country - ranking it as the world’s most beautiful, most culturally rich and friendliest place – while being very critical of their government.
