Alert: 1/4 There is a very high probability of load shedding today from 6pm to 10pm.— Eskom Hld SOC Ltd (@Eskom_SA) November 20, 2014
Just when you thought Eskom had it all under control and that there was a light at the end of a very dark tunnel, the power utility sent out a tweet warning people of the possibility of load shedding tonight.
While warning the country of a planned power failure might be considered considerate, consumers are left wondering how often and for how long still?
702's Xolani Gwala spoke to Eskom's General Manager from Demand Side, Andrew Etzinger about this sudden warning; whether there will indeed be load shedding and why there are problems...
We are certainly right on the edge if we do come across technical problems or if the demand for electricity shoots up. Thursday evenings are a time of greatest vulnerability to the grid, which means we have used up pretty much all our contingency for the week, which gets replenished over the weekend and it's the peak just before going into the weekend, so it is a tough time.— Andrew Etzinger, General Manager of Eskom
Etzinger did assure Xolani that no load shedding has been scheduled but that they wanted to put out an early warning just in case.
Another pertinent issue was raised by Bruce Whitfield, also on The Afternoon Drive - He asked Etzinger about the claims by trade union Solidarity, that they had warned Eskom about the Majuba power station’s silo collapse, before it happened, and that there are signs of stress in a second silo.
Solidarity have claimed to have information with regard to silo weaknesses and certainly we take that very seriously. we are working together with Solidarity... we are trying to get that information brought into the investigation.... we really do welcome Solidarity's contribution to both the investigation and any other technical risks that their members may be aware of....— Andrew Etzinger, General Manager of Eskom
So as the sun sets with potentially bad news for thousands of South Africans... get out your candles and prepare yourself. You have been warned!
