How to have an intimate relationship (without sex)

It's possible to be in an intimate relationship without taking your clothes off, explains clinical sexologist Dr Eve.

Dr Eve says there are different kinds and depths of intimacy in different relationships.

Relationships present themselves on a sexuality spectrum, according to different forms of attachment needs.

She advises that intimacy is an investment in a relationship that leads to self-revelation and disclosure.

It's starts with being intimate with ourselves. We often get into a situation with people because we feel needy.

Dr Eve, clinical sexologist

Whether it is fleeting or forever, intimacy results in the other person knowing you as you know yourself.

Dr Eve reiterates that intimacy refers to more than sex and that it is a process that requires time and trust.

The lowest form of intimacy can be sexual activity.

Types of Intimacy :

  • Cognitive sharing or intellectual intimacy: when people exchange thoughts, share ideas and enjoy similarities and differences between their opinions. It can feel incredibly satisfying.
  • Experiential intimacy: when you work side by side, do intimate activities together, without sexuality.
  • Emotional intimacy: when couples comfortably share their feelings with each other or empathize with one another to understand and try to be aware of the other person’s emotions
  • Sexual intimacy: the stereotypical definition of intimacy that most people are familiar with, which involves sexual contact.
