Uber attacks becoming more violent, blamed on victims - eNCA journo

It appears the violence involved in Uber-related attacks has escalated, reports eNCA journalist Karyn Maughan.

There are growing concerns over the safety of passengers, particularly women, using Uber.

The cab-hailing service has made headlines in recent months, following a series of assaults involving Uber drivers.

Maughan explains that the first major incident in early July involved the mother of popular musician Tamara Dey, Susan.

Susan was allegedly strangled, robbed and raped in a veld by an Uber driver whom she had called to collect her from Montecasino in Fourways‚ Johannesburg.

Maughan says the series of subsequent attacks were not all made public or reported in the media.

The latest attack involved a young couple who were assaulted while taking what they believed was an Uber taxi home in Sunninghill, Johannesburg.

They were abducted and taken to a house in Tembisa for about 10 hours, where the young man was stabbed and the woman was brutally assaulted.

According Maughan, Uber has not given any satisfactory explanation regarding the incidents.

The violence in these attacks has escalated. What is even more horrific is that these people who went through this get a ride receipt from Uber for this journey from hell.

Karyn Maughan, eNCA journalist

She says that Uber has offered the promise of safety, but fails to be accountable for how criminals access their technology.

Maughan says that Uber suggested that somehow traumatised passengers are complicit in their own victimhood.

NOTE: Uber management said they would respond to the allegations in due course.
