25 November 2015 8:00 PM

Mark Heywood, Bonang Mohale, Wendy Appelbaum and Ian Mann discuss the theme "Doing good business, better. Going beyond profit.”

Doing good business, better. Going beyond profit...

This was the theme of “Shapeshifter Unplugged”, a special outside broadcast of The Money Show’s weekly “Shapeshifter” feature.

Bruce Whitfield spoke to the following business giants:

  • Mark Heywood, Executive Director of SECTION27 (he is also on the Steering Committee for Unite Against Corruption)

  • Bonang Mohale, Chairperson of Shell South Africa

  • Wendy Appelbaum, businessperson, philanthropist and wine estate owner

  • Ian Mann, business book guru and MD of Gateways Business Consultants

Shapeshifter Unplugged guests Wendy Appelbaum, Bonang Mohale, Bruce Whitfield (presenter), Mark Heywood and Ian Mann.

The Money Show's Bruce Whitfield.

Profits are difficult to attain at the moment.

Wendy Appelbaum

Economic vision trumps political power.

Bonang Mohale

In many ways Business has fled the challenges of creating a capable state. I’d like to see a braver Business.

Mark Heywood

Without profit we’ll achieve very little.

Bonang Mohale

Profit is essential! It’s the only way to fire up this economy.

Wendy Appelbaum

There are parts of our economy that are enormously profitable because there’s a desperate need and people are willing to pay anything.

Mark Heywood

Conscious capitalism says ‘I need to make profit for my shareholders. I need to pay living wages. I need to pay my suppliers a fair price’.

Ian Mann

Every part of society is entirely interrelated.

Ian Mann

Conscious capitalism is a figment of Ian Mann’s imagination.

Mark Heywood

I don’t think there’s an alternative to capitalism. However, it’s a flawed system that benefits only the few.

Mark Heywood

Was Lewis selling furniture or were they selling insurance?

Wendy Appelbaum

I think that Costco is a conscious company

Ian Mann

Corporate Social Investment is a very big bee in my bonnet. It’s an example of ticking boxes.

Mark Heywood

Corporates are scared that if they support people like me they’ll get into trouble.

Mark Heywood

It is Business that is contributing to organisations such as Greenpeace and Treasure the Karoo Action Group.

Bonang Mohale

Business can play a much more important role in our country than is currently the case.

Mark Heywood

Businesses should have supported the corruption march, but they were too frightened.

Wendy Appelbaum

Imagine if you used the know-how of SAB to deliver books to Limpopo.

Bonang Mohale

The primary responsibility of Business is business.

Ian Mann

Businesses should be allowed to be angry at Government.

Wendy Appelbaum

Without Business, Government and Labour working together we have no chance.

Bonang Mohale
