Despite major advances, HIV/AIDS remains one of the world's most significant public health challenges, particularly in low and middle income countries, with new diagnoses every year and young women in sub-Saharan Africa seen as being particularly at risk.
Founder and Executive Director of the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute, Professor Helen Rees, on Tuesday spoke to John Robbie about strides made in HIV prevention, new trends and SA’s extensively large HIV treatment programme.
Young women are our biggest group of new [HIV] infections. We need a change in messaging, which has to be supported by a social movement and new technology. The technology we have at the moment proves to be too difficult particularly for young people, and particularly for young women.— Prof Helen Rees, Wits Reproductive Health & HIV Institute
