Meet Kopano Matlwa Mabaso: Best-selling author and dedicated doctor

At just 21, Dr Kopano Matlwa Mabaso, had written a best-selling and critically acclaimed novel Coconut: A coming of age story set in post-Apartheid South Africa, which tackles the delicate issues of identity politics.

She wrote that debut novel book while studying towards a medical degree at UCT.

Writing and engaging in the arts makes me more human.

Since then, this young writer has written and published two other works, Period Pain and Spilt Milk. She’s also a Rhodes scholar and has just recently submitted her PHD thesis in Public Health at Oxford University.

Our education system really short-changes the majority of South Africans. That is the big white elephant in the room.
