'ANC has to change or it will die' – anti-apartheid activist Lord Peter Hain

I became Public Enemy Number One here [South Africa].

Lord Peter Hain

The ANC has to change or it will die.

Lord Peter Hain

You cannot have economic stability when you have a government that doesn’t care about the consequences of its decisions.

Lord Peter Hain

Peter Hain (born 16 February 1950) is a British Labour Party politician.

He was a member of the British parliament between 1991 and 2015.

Hain went to the UK from South Africa as a teenager.

Police arrest Peter Hain at 10 Downing Street during an anti-apartheid demonstration in 1969.

During the 1970s he was a well-known anti-apartheid campaigner.

He chaired the “Stop the Seventy Tour” campaign which disrupted tours by South African sports teams in 1969 and 1970.

He was the target of a failed letter bomb attack in 1972.

In 1974 he was tried for, and acquitted of, a bank robbery after the South African Bureau of State Security framed him.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Hain for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

This whole thing of the Guptas and the Presidency is very dangerous for South Africa. As a friend of South Africa whose childhood was here, whose parents were South African born, involved in the struggle as I was, I see a lot of what is happening as a betrayal of everything we fought for and made sacrifices for.

Lord Peter Hain

The people who funded Bell Pottinger are examples of monopoly capital of the worse kind.

Lord Peter Hain

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

She [the Queen] is extraordinary! You wouldn’t expect it, but she has a great sense of humour.

Lord Peter Hain

My mom and dad were both South African born… My dad’s first job was in Nairobi.

Lord Peter Hain

My entire childhood was spent in South Africa, most of it in Pretoria.

Lord Peter Hain

Pretoria Boys High, I think, is the best school in the world.

Lord Peter Hain

Banned people were not allowed to communicate with each other. My parents were the first married couple to be banned.

Lord Peter Hain

I came up with the idea of stopping Springbok tours by running on the pitch.

Lord Peter Hain

I am [outraged at Bell Pottinger].

Lord Peter Hain

Fake news has been their [Bell Pottinger] speciality.

Lord Peter Hain

Bell Pottinger has broken every rule in the book.

Lord Peter Hain

There are lots of good people in the ANC that are putting up a fight.
