The life and times of former Minister of Finance Nhlanhla Nene

My dad was a teacher and my mother was a nurse.

Nhlanhla Nene

It [faith] is the anchor of my life...

Nhlanhla Nene

You could see it [his removal as Finance Minister] coming. So I was ready for it…

Nhlanhla Nene

When President Jacob Zuma fired former Minister of Finance Nhlanhla Nene on 9 December 2015, it heralded the start of instability never before seen in democratic South Africa.

The rand plummeted, and kept on falling, until the re-appointment of Pravin Gordhan as Finance Minister a few days later.

The FTSE/JSE financial 15 index plummeted by 13.36% while the FTSE/JSE banks index lost 18.54%.

Before the dust settled, R169.6 billion of value was wiped from the JSE.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Nene for this weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Nene discussed his life growing up and his eventful career.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

I’m aging in style!

Nhlanhla Nene

Perhaps it takes reaching the bottom to be able to pick up the pieces.

Nhlanhla Nene

This is the first time we have an Eskom board endorsed by the entire nation.

Nhlanhla Nene

I was humbled by the reaction of South Africans on that day [when he got fired as Finance Minister]...

Nhlanhla Nene

We still have that wealth of integrity [at Treasury]… there is some erosion… but it would take a lot of doing to dismantle the institution that was built over many years…

Nhlanhla Nene

It [Kranskop, KZN] is home.

Nhlanhla Nene

I went to Parliament in 1999.

Nhlanhla Nene

All my tertiary studies was done while I was already in Parliament.

Nhlanhla Nene

I was truly grateful for the opportunity to serve South Africa.
