Meet turnaround specialist Bob Head, SAA’s brave new Chief Financial Officer

We have to get income up and costs down [at SAA]. It’s going to be painful…

Bob Head, SAA

I’ve been there [SAA] for three weeks… My wife found us a house… I’m now living in South Africa… I’m looking forward to Monday; my dogs arrive.

Bob Head, SAA

Last month troubled state-owned airline South African Airways (SAA) announced the appointment of turnaround specialist Bob Head as its new interim chief financial officer (CFO).

This comes after the airline suspended CFO Phumeza Nhantsi and former chief executive Musa Zwane following a forensic probe.

Head brings to SAA his vast experience in various senior management roles at home, and abroad.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Head for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

Bob Head, SAA

I like using my brain, and I like people. When a company is in trouble, the big guys always seem to get a big payoff… I hate the fact…. that the small guys have to suffer…

Bob Head, SAA

Old Mutual and Nedbank had a quite distant relationship… It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… but everybody just bent their backs… It was absolutely fantastic… and, of course, we were successful.

Bob Head, SAA

I staked my career twice on Mike Brown…

Bob Head, SAA

I would leave my wallet with Ivan [Pillay]; I will let my daughter stay with Ivan…

Bob Head, SAA

Yes [when asked if SAA is salvageable].

Bob Head, SAA

I have a six months’ contract…

Bob Head, SAA

Some of it [turnaround of SAA] is quite simple…

Bob Head, SAA
