Meet Phumzile Langeni, tasked by the President to raise R1.2trillion (TRILLION!)

I don’t know the President at all... he had my résumé, and from there I got the call.

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

It would be a failing of 55 million people [when asked what happens if they don’t get the investments]… We sit in a very precarious position. Fiscally, we’re not in good shape… Ordinary South Africans want to be the masters of their own destiny…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

You may or may not have heard of Phumzile Langeni, but she has one of the most important – and toughest – jobs in South Africa.

President Cyril Ramaphosa recently asked her to join his special presidential envoy to crisscross the planet looking for investments.

She will join former Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel, former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and former Standard Bank head Jacko Maree in a hunt for R1.2 trillion in new investments in the next five years.

Besides her terrifyingly vital jobs as Presidential Investor Emissary, Langeni is also the Executive Chairperson of Afropulse and Chairperson at Primedia Limited.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Langeni for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

The problem with being a stockbroker… one has trust issues! I haven’t dabbled in the market… I must be honest; I don’t do as much as I should.

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

I was invited to serve on the board of Primedia a few years ago… Fast paced… if you sleep on the job for a second, the world has changed… Media is about people…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

I met Jacko many years ago… Trevor I had seen when he was Minister… Mcebisi I only met now…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

We’ve had meetings, and we’ve worked on the ‘how’…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

I’m very politically conscious… I’m not a political player… We’re not expected to be politically savvy… The team does have political heavyweights… I don’t really worry about the politics, but one has to be sensitive…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

Charity begins at home, that is why there’s a lot of focus on South African businesses… It is very important… that we’ve got Government, Business, Labour and society pulling in the same direction…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

The issue of land… some of the international counterparts have seen land reform in a number of emerging markets… it’s about the ‘how’…

Phumzile Langeni, Presidential Investor Emissary

I believe in the future of South Africa… If one goes back to the heydays of 2010 and the start of our democracy in 1994… if there’s a common goal… you see a very progressive society.
