SA start-up uses local talent to teach machines to think for themselves

It sounds a little dull.

Bruce Whitfield, The Money Show

It’s exciting!

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

The work we’ve done is applicable on a global scale… Our vision is to become a global company, using local talent…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

Frans Cronje is the Managing Director (and cofounder) of DataProphet, a Cape Town based machine learning start-up that specialises in creating tailor-made machine learning algorithms.

Since founding DataProphet in 2014, Frans has been involved in a wide range of machine learning projects including emotion recognition and natural language processing.

Cronje has a Master’s Degree in Mathematical Statistics and an Honours in Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town.

In March DataProphet made headlines when it secured funding from venture capital firm Knife Capital.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Cronje for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

...we’re not experts; we’re relatively young…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

A lot of AI writes an algorithm that writes an algorithm… We’re getting the machine to think for itself…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

There is a large amount of talent [in South Africa]… Basing our company in Cape Town has enabled us to build a good team… The nature of work we do, you can be based anywhere in the world… That we’re here doesn’t matter…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

For us to connect to Europe takes 150 milliseconds… It’s fast, but you’ll notice it… It’s an irritation we face…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

The nature of starting in South Africa… you have to build a business first, then build product.

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

We employ 30 people…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

We’ve taken money from Knife Capital… they share a similar vision to ourselves… taking South African companies to an international market…

Frans Cronje, DataProphet

The nice thing about consulting is you immediately start to earn cash...
