#DataMustFall! Meet Rain CEO Willem Roos... he is making it happen

The very robust sales of our fixed line offering… made us look very carefully at our capacity. We don’t have any issues now… We’re just being very careful…

Willem Roos, Rain

Price is an enormous factor… the moment you drop the price you tend to sell a lot more…

Willem Roos, Rain

In June mobile start-up Rain ruffled more than a few feathers when it launched its data-only (i.e. no voice) 4G service in South Africa.

Rain offered data at R50 a gig – and no contracts, bundles, monthly fees.

The clincher for many?

Data never expires!

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Rain CEO Willem Roos for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.

Rain this past week made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

It announced it will on 1 November temporarily stop sales of its LTE for home products through partner ISPs due to severe capacity limitations.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it).

It’s a nice problem to have. There’s a huge demand for high-speed, affordable data…

Willem Roos, Rain

The cost per gig depends on how much demand you can create, also in the right areas… it’s a business that requires scale…

Willem Roos, Rain

We’ve built 2500 towers in the past 18 months.

Willem Roos, Rain

We’ve had complaints from our other competitors at the Competition Authority… it’s all good from a regulatory point of view… telecoms is highly regulated.

Willem Roos, Rain

Most of our rollout is focussed on the metro areas… It’s part of Rain’s plans to have very good coverage throughout the metro townships in South Africa… Townships are ideal places to put up towers…

Willem Roos, Rain

My kids… they have no need of voice services… they use WhatsApp to call… our challenge is to ensure that all kids in South Africa has access to data… we provide free data to 25 000 school kids…

Willem Roos, Rain
