DIAL A NERD presents FIND YOUR NERD

Is your head in the Cloud?

Over the past few years, and particularly in the business environment, there has been a bigger move into “the cloud”. But what is it, and what are the benefits for you and your business?

Very simply, cloud computing is storing and accessing data over the internet instead of your computer’s hard drive or a local server. Commonly used cloud services for both individuals and businesses include Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple’s iCloud and Amazon Cloud.

Four benefits of moving to the cloud:

Backup and recovery

Your computer hard drive crashes, your server stops working, or a power cut means you lose the last 30 minutes of that presentation you were working on with 10 minutes to deadline. Working off and saving to the cloud means that that data is stored somewhere off site, usually over several servers. The bottom line? You’re less likely to lose data.

Flexibility

Scale up or scale down, depending on how much storage space or infrastructure you need. You can add and remove servers and users with just a few clicks, and if you know that there’s a spike in traffic heading to your website, you can increase your availability for a short period without having to invest heavily.

In addition, you and your employees can work from wherever you can find internet.

Automatic updates and integration

In a previous article we talked about the benefits of ensuring that automatic operating system updates are enabled. The same applies to the rest of the software that your business uses. These upgrades can be a nightmare for IT managers working on on-site systems – cloud software is updated automatically, without the need for IT managers to spend huge amounts of time on upgrades.

Cost-efficient

What should be music to many small business owners’ ears – cloud computing is more cost-effective. Traditional desktop software can cost companies a lot in term of license fees, and on-site servers can be costly to repair or maintain. Additionally, there are several solutions available – from annual rates to once-off payments and pay-as-you-go.

Think the cloud is for you, but don’t know where to start? We know a nerd for that.
