ANC 2017 Elective Conference

'Ramaphosa's first 100 hours are quite difficult'

Although some are saying it's still too early to tell, there have been some concerns over the newly elected National Executive Committee members of the ANC.

The concern is whether Cyril Ramaphosa, as the president of the ANC, would be able to steer the movement in the right direction without disruptions from the Jacob Zuma faction.

Senior Research Fellow And Political Economist at Trade Collective, Lebohang Pheko says the 80 member list of the NEC is quite similar to the top six which consists of an alignment of different forces.

It is the same reflection of the bruising factionalism that we've been seeing within the top six of the ANC.

Pheko says that although there are concerns over the Zuma faction, it seems many of them do agree that Jacob Zuma is becoming a liability if they want to win the 2019 elections.

The ground has been shifting over the past few days. Initially when we saw the announcement of the top six, many people were concerned whether Ramaphosa would have the space to recall Jacob Zuma.

What is important is, as Ramaphosa indicated in his land remarks, he needs to make an announcement fairly soon and make a statement of intent very soon.

Compared to the US president first 100 days, I think Ramaphosa's first 100 hours are quite difficult. He makes the right noises that he is going to be tough on corruption but that's not going to happen until he deals with the root and the foundation of corruption which is being enabled by the state President Jacob Zuma.
