Gauteng Region steps up short and medium-term efforts to curb climate change

In recent years, the threatening realisation of climate change has become clear and, unless radical action is taken to curb its effects, South Africa will find itself grappling with extreme temperatures that could threaten food security.

In response to the dangers that climate change presents, the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development is stepping up efforts to mobilise climate action through the Gauteng City Region Climate Change Over-Arching Strategy and Action Plan: Climate Change Strategic Action Plan (CCSAP).

702’s Joanne Joseph sits down with GDARD’s Basani Ndindani to discuss the various interventions within the Gauteng City Region's response strategy, to make Gauteng a climate-resilient and low carbon city region.

It’s a response strategy. So, it gives short and medium term prioritised action of how, as the Gauteng city region, we are going to respond and deal with climate change impacts.

Basani Ndindani, Director of environmental policy, planning and co-ordination

The Action Plan prioritises implementation of key projects in sectors of natural resources, agriculture and agro-processing, disaster risk management, water, institutional buildings, human settlements, energy supply, industry and mining as well as transport and waste.

Some of the programmes are already in the implementation phase. For example, we work closely with COGTA, the Gauteng cooperative government department… they’ve developed the disaster management framework. We work with them, in terms of rolling out into the municipalities to ensure that the disaster risk management plans taken into consideration, climate change.

In addition, the Gauteng Climate Change forum established the Gauteng Climate Change Indaba, a platform for all relevant departments and local authorities to share information on their climate change-related policies and, interventions – also, minimising duplication of efforts across all spheres of government and, the private sector.

Sustainable development is a priority in the province and we are maximising efforts by working together.
