Increased traffic for Joburg long-distance taxis as lockdown looms

Wanderers taxi rank received high volumes of commuters on Thursday with long-distance taxis still operating.

Hundreds of people appeared to be making their way to provinces outside Gauteng despite being cautioned against travelling in an effort to avoid spreading and contracting the coronavirus.

Eyewitness News reporter Edwin Ntshidi was at the taxi rank.

What we are seeing is that hundreds of people are departing to various provinces including your KZN, Eastern and Western Cape, as well as Mpumalanga.

People are saying they cannot wait for 21 days and need to go home to see their loved ones.

Santaco has promised that people will be provided with stuff to prevent the COVID-19. When you enter the rank you will see some officials and marshals providing sanitsers to people entering the rank.

The main question I asked them was: 'Áre you not scared that because you heave not been tested that you are now taking it (coronavirus) home?' They are saying it is better to take it home rather than die here in this province.

Ntshidi says there were no police officers in sight.

Since I arrived, I have not even seen a single police officer that is making sure there is compliance.

Edwin Ntshidi, Reporter - EWN

It appears that people will be leaving for the better part of the day until midnight.
