Pablo Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” a breakthrough 1932 painting, sold for US$106.5 million in 2010.

…the most important thing from living artists is how they manage themselves as a brand… You don’t want volatility in pricing brought on by the artists themselves…

What’s vital in the emerging market is timing… There are a number of artists that I’ve worked with that have more than doubled in the space of just a year… Once you’ve missed that sweet-spot, it’s going to take a lot longer to double your money…

Every now and again we read about the record price some or the other work of art fetched on auction.

A few weeks back, for example, the Rubens masterpieces “Portrait of a Gentleman”, with an estimated value of R8 million, went up for sale.

The 420-year-old painting was smuggled from Germany in the 1930s, and has been hanging on a wall in a house in Johannesburg since that time.

Another Rubens painting coming up for auction in July is expected to fetch R90 million.

So, what does that mean for the artwork you bought to match your couch a few years ago?

It’s a tricky art [to valuate art]… valuations come from track records… there are all sorts of methodologies… you could go to an art advisor, auction house, insurance companies that specialise in art…

Contemporary art is about social commentary… it’s post-modern…

It [the art market] is worth about $38 billion… the African market is about 0.5% of that…
