After years of revenue declines, starting around the mid-2010s, newspaper websites around the world, but especially in the US, started putting up paywalls.

The use of paywalls is highly controversial, due to concerns about ethics and effectiveness.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Daily Maverick Publisher Styli Charalambous for his weekly "The Science Of" feature.

Charalambous discussed paywalls in general, and why his publication is asking for voluntary donations instead.
