'New law threatens to wipe out vaping in South Africa'

It’s actually a safer product than tobacco cigarettes… When one vapes… it’s an aerosol… it’s less harmful than the burning of tar…

Zodwa Velleman, Vapour Product Association of South Africa

We have studies that show that 0.1% of people who partake in vaping are new users… We haven’t seen that vaping is a gateway to smoking.

The Tobacco Bill threatens to wipe out vaping in South Africa and deprive millions of a safer alternative to smoking.

So says Zodwa Velleman, CEO at the Vapour Product Association of South Africa (VPA).

The Bill groups vaping with traditional cigarettes despite independent international research showing, according to VPA, that e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful.

The VPA says the market for e-cigarettes is worth more than R1 billion and supports 4000 fulltime jobs.

Velleman says that lumping e-cigarettes and cigarettes together when regulating is “unscientific and potentially devastating.”

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Velleman for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Nicotine… it’s not just the substance that causes harm… the tar you get when you light up a cigarette…
