Friday Profile: Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng

This Friday, 702 host, Azania Mosaka explored the interests and passions of Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng.

Mofokeng is a medical doctor, an activist, facilitator, speaker and columnist. She also runs a reproductive health clinic in Sandton and serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the Sexual and Reproductive Coalition (SRJC).

Mofokeng says what makes her job special is having people and her patients trust her with their most intimate aspects of their lives.

As soon as i knew what a doctor was, i always wanted to be one.

Mofokeng says she grew up in a small town in the Free State called Phuthaditjhaba and goes on to say that she had a blissful childhood.

She adds that the first language she learned is sign language because her mom taught at a school for deaf children.

No one can ever describe how intense medical school is. You have a lot of work to do in a short period of time.

Mofokeng also established a youth friendly clinic in Matatiele, in the Eastern Cape while she was still studying in medical school. She explains that she also trained some of the nurses about sexual health and how to engage with younger people in the area.

It was interesting how after every visit at the clinics, i had young people wait for me outside of the clinics. That got me thinking and asking, what is it about the system that doesn't enable young people to feel safe to discuss sexual with other nurses and practitioners.
