At corner of Kitchener and 5th Avenues in Kensington (opposite Total Garage attached to Darras Centre, there are unrepaired major excavations that were caried out to repair/replace inderground pipes. The extensive remaining holes in the road make this busy intersection very dangerous. This situation has persisted for approxiamtely 2 months.

Many of the street lights on Monkor Road, between Beyers Naude and Rabie Roads, Kelland have not been working for over four months. Part of the road is very dark, which makes it unsafe for road users at night.

Good day. I’ve created the below listed issues on the joburg.org.za website. I doubt that the council makes use of this site anymore as issues are sometimes closed or deleted without being resolved. Entering the meter readings also feels like a wasted effort when the council just applies their "guestimates" every month. I hope you can assist in closing these issues: IR0127213 2010-01-26 - Open Trench across road. IR0127212 2010-01-26 - Potholes, poor raod surface. IR0127211 2010-01-26 - Potholes. IR0127210 2010-01-26 - blocked kerbside drain. IR0127209 2010-01-26 - blocked kerbside drain. Thank you.

Empire Place in Sandhurst has been neglected by the council for the last couple of years with the result that the road is crumbling because there are no stormwater drain which lead to potholes and then we have sewage leaking out of manhole cover because the infrastructure cannot cope. Have reported this on numerous occasions but to no avail, please help.

Lennox Street corner Hastings Avenue in Waverley JHB, there are 3 potholes in Lennox Street and an ongoing water leak on the corner that has had at least 2 attempts to repair it. Moreover, a large amount of grass is growing in the roadway at the south end of Lennox street, and the longer it has to take over the street, the bigger the repair will be.

First Road Farmall down to the river is in such a bad state that us residents are unable to use this road without damaging our cars- and we have no choice but to use this road. We have correspondence with JRA dating back to 2006 begging them to fix this road properly as grading it 4 times a year does nothing- it needs storm water drains because of its slope when it rains all the water runs down this road to the Jukskei river and it destroys the road and washes away any grading. We have been promised many times that JRA will fix this road, but they never do. I can supply all correspondence and photos if you would like. Now with all the rain we have experienced, the bridge that goes over the jukskei on Riverbend road is almost washed away and potholes on this road- I dont even know where to begin with the amount. I know we are a small pound in the ocean with our residential road and JRA with all this rain have major roads to fix, but we have been BEGGING for almost 4 years about our road and I would love for someone for JRA to drive their car on our residential road where we pay taxes for it to be usable, and see how they feel when they hit every pothole, donga and trench and rock and brick- then have to replace their sump or tyre- THEN they will finally do something about this PUBLIC road. Thanks 702!

After repeated requests to JRA, ( First Road , cnr Riverside & Main in Farmall) to grade down towards the river was never graded in December 2009 when all the other roads were graded. The road deteriorated to such an extent that not one of the residents of my property had a choice but to use our vehicles on this road, despite the fact that it was COMPLETELY washed away. Our of sheer desperation, one of the residents tried to pass through and here vehicle was stuck. She called us to assist and all the residents living on the property that uses this road, went to assist. After hours of struggling, the vehicle could pass. A tenant was injured when he fell into the ditch and sprained his ankle. Many of our vehicles have been damaged in trying to get in and out of the property and yet JRA have not even responded after promising to fix the road. We have spoken to Hendrik van Tonder, Jimmy Oliver, Rhulane Ngobeni and requested a site visit. We have requested them to call us and they have blatantly ignored all the correspondence and requests. We had no formal response after submitting our requests in writing to Randburg Depot. We have been asking for this road to be repaired since 2006. I have all the correspondence dating back till then where all types of promises were made. We have been told that imported materials will repair our road. On Saturday all my tenants and I, spent more than two hours, physically picking up rocks and stones to fill the road in an attempt to be able to use this road. We asked Randburg Depot earlier in the week to assist us in getting a compactor so that we could at least do something but they failed to even respond in writing or help us. We are damaging our vehicles and we are desperate. I am extremely disappointed in the manner in which this problem is being address ed. Since 2006 we have been waiting for something to happen. It’s unacceptable and it is appalling to expect residents to use a road that is NOT in a condition for cars to pass through. I cannot accept an excuse where I am told that equipment is broken. We pay our services and expect the roads to be in a condition that we may use them. This is a public road! For three weeks in a row Pikitup are not collecting our refuse because they cannot get their truck down our road! No deliveries or collections can be made to our property by most vehicles and we cannot have visitors as the road is in such a state! The pictures below depict what we have to call a public road! We have basic needs! We NEED to get to work, without a road that is impossible! We NEED to buy food, without a road that is impossible! We NEED our refuse to be removed, without a road that is impossible! We NEED a road which has a storm water drainage system which won’t get washed away every time it rains! Seeing that we are tax payers, we ask for this road because it’s a necessity in our lives!

Dear 702, I am a resident at 114 First Road, Farmall, Randburg, Gauteng. This might sound strange, but I wish from the bottom of my heart that I could complain about a blocked storm water drain, unsafe pavements or even a pot hole! But, it is a well known fact that one needs a public road to have the joys of a blocked storm water drain, unsafe pavements or even a pot hole. Our public road has no storm water drainage, no pavement and looks more like an extreme 4x4 testing facility than a public road. . .The road gets so bad that it is completely impassable by truck. . .what would happen if there is a fire, or someone needs to get to the hospital ASAP, but they can’t because there is no public road to do so?! I can’t even complain about the “Bridge in Riverbend Road” which is completely destroyed and washed away because I can’t get there! I am a normal South-African tax paying citizen, and these are my needs . . . I need a road!! And a whole lot of other residents need that bridge to be fixed!! PLEASE HELP US!

On the 26th November, 2009 I reported that there was a lot of debris on the corner of Atlas Road and Bonaero Drive in Kempton Park. This is a very big intersection, and is very close to the airport. There have been a number of major road accidents on this corner, and there are pieces of motor vehicles, broken windscreens etc. lying all over the road and on the pavements. Nothing was done about it, so on the 28th January 2010 I phoned the council again, and they promised to prioritise it. Still nothing has happened. Please help!

Re: Street Address: Corner of 5th Avenue Linden and Salerno Road, Emma Park Koppie, Linden. I am writing to ask your help to communicate with Jhb City Parks on cleaning up and protecting this natural parkland and heritage site. I have on numerous occassions reported to City Parks about the vagrants sleeping here, there are no toilet facilities so they are defacating in the park. There have been numerous reports of drug trafficking, littering, cutting down of the trees, starting fires and flashing. This site is a huge security risk to the residents of the surrounding suburbs. The park/ hertitage site stretches from 5th Avenue right down past the Abrahm Kriel Childrens Home and levels out onto what could be a beautiful community park area opposite Risidale Primary School. However, the vagrants that have moved into this area of the park are living on the banks of the stream that runs through the property, making it unsafe and littered with rubbish. Jhb City Parks have acknowledged receipt of my complaints and assured me that they will look into this as a matter of urgency however that was in September 2009,4 months later and nothing has changed. This greenspace has real environmental value: habitat for native plants animals and birds, reduction of runoff to storm sewers, improvement of air quality, etc. Please help Regards Gabby Protecting this heritage site and park area fits in with many of Johannesburg’s priorites: environmental stewardship, healthy living, community engagement, and city revitalization. It also fits in with the appreciation of natural beauty and outdoor recreation that is part of our identity, and that attracts visitors and professionals to our city.

Driving into & out of OR Tambo airport, esp. on the R24 highway, the grass between and alongside the road is over 1m high with weeds of similar heights growing out the verges and stormwater drains (plus litter). This unsightly mess extends from the airport all the way to the N12 highway, approximately 8kms or so and this is (and will be) most visitors to SA and Joburg’s first impressions of the city, province and country..... Please cut the grass, remove the weeds and possibly plant some flowers / colour along this route to provide an appropriate welcome from the airport.

Hi, there has been a water leak on the corner of Northway & Marlboro, Kelvin, for the past 36 months that I have been using this route. It is a "downhill" robot. I am surprised that no serious accidents occur there. Perhaps there have been and I missed it. I have just spoke the property owners at this corner, Warren Walker 0721048128 & Bruce Magill 0798891700. They have been reporting this leak for the past three years. Useless council repairs it (sometimes), and after e few weeks the leak starts all over again. Useless JHB Water ref number 3928846 12 Jeb 2010 My cell number 0827952192. From what I have heard on 702, this method works.

I would like to report that the lighting on the M1 highway between Grayston and Buccleuch interchange has not been working for a long time. I was informed by SANRAL and JHB council that it is provincial responsibility, while the province blamed JRA. With FIFA 2010 approaching it is not a very good sign when the main highway between two host cities is not lit up, I would suggest that it should be sorted out before all the tourists arrive.

Can I please ask for your intervention and help into this matter, despite repeated calls made via the service call centre being 011 375 5555 with no positive results. This line just rings and nobody answers.I have also made a view calls to the local offices responsible for the street light repairs in Lenasia 011 213 3026/3039 trying to get hold of the supervisor Mr.Peter Abrams and his supervisor Mr Sipho Gumede ,they are forever not available or in meetings. The Street Lights are not working in ext 5 Ennerdale George and Olivien Streets and surrounding areas since before Christmas last year (December 2009).This is a hot spot for mischief makers because it is pitch black around this area at night. The community is being angered by this non response of these public servants.Must people first resort to demonstrations, take to the streets and violence before these problems are attended too?The community of Ennerdale are getting frustrated, sick and tired. The grass in the vicinity on the Extension 1 area(Olympus Street) where the stadium is,is overgrown and was last cut before Christmas last year, this poses a safety hazard especially on the corner of Olympus and James street. There is a stop street and the grass is obscuring the view of drivers wanting to turn right into James street to go out of Ennerdale.( This is also dangerous at night when you drive up the driveway to open your garage gate and find yourself being hi-jacked) I am not sure where our Councillor Nyambe for this ward G is (not very visible) ,I am not sure if these people drive around the area and to observe these things that need attention,if not perhaps we need to create the awareness with them.I challenge them to come and drive around this area at night to see for themselves.

When driving along the M1 highway, it is noticeable how tall the weeds have grown on the middle island. I am embarrassed to think what visitors to our city think when they drive that route to and from O.R Tambo to the tourist areas of Joburg and Pretoria. I would like to see workers regularly cutting and spraying the island to keep it free of weeds and grass, which would not require expensive capital investment and would offer employment opportunities to many of the unemployed people in our city.

Just after the Nelson Mandela Bridge on the CBD there is an old derelict Transnet building that is an eye sore and a security risk. There is also an informal taxi rank that has settled there. I would like to suggest that Transnet refurbish this building and area or demolish it. I work for Absa in New Town and this area is a big smash and grab area for our employees driving to and from work every day. There also seems to be an absolute sense of lawlessness from the taxi drivers who do not obey the rules of the road...but this is a seperate issue.

With the 2010 Joburg Municipality needs to do something about Gandi Square. If you are a tourist visiting the country and wishing to travel by Metrobus around Jo-Burg. There is no information about the bus services available and none of the bus stops have signs indicating where the buses go to at the relevent stops. I think it time that we gear up towards the tourists and even for our local people.

Jhb could compile a simple "welcome manual" and distribute it to all residents. This would include how to interact with tourists, what our emergency numbers are, points of interest, information centres, etc. This should be targeted at residents not tourist so that we are able to assist tourists when they arrive.

Our parks (in Lenasia) and our roadsides in general are an eyesore because of litter. Much of this litter is recycleable (ie. glass, paper & plastic). My suggestion (as if no-ones thought of this before!!!) is to somehow reward deposits for recycling - like Vitality points for a depot at a Virgin Active gym perhaps? Fines for litterbugs are obvious but clearly not implementable (or are they?)

1.How about getting the government(public service) & labour unions to ensure that they do all their wage negotiations for next year way before the world cup to avoid industrial actions during the world cup. 2. Taxi hooting - (not quite worldcup related)- How about in conjuction with the department of Transport & Department of Safety a device of a different sound from the normal hooting sound is developed for the exclusive use by the taxis. That way we can keep the original sound for what it was intended for in the first place.

Surrounding areas such as Riverlea, Nasrec, Aeroton etc should have had community initiatives set up such that with minimal finance they could have been given the power to regenerate their surroundings with building schemes, cleanups, businnesses (tourism based) and improvment of vegetation. If you think about it the surrounding areas should have sufficient high class accomodation, parks, shopping malls and services but there are no such things that exist, there are various places where dumping of garbage is rife as well as exposed underground piping and services, rundown roads etc etc. the best solution at this stage is to involve the communities organise finance and give them a sense of pride in the surrounding areas by starting community building initiatives. all of this should have been done a long time before, after all the openeing game as well as final will be held there, we need to put out a very good impression to promote tourism. get the 702 listeneres involved lets have cleanups weekly or monthly. take a drive around the area and make a note of problems then list them on the site and awiat solutions from the listeners.
