When driving along the M1 highway, it is noticeable how tall the weeds have grown on the middle island. I am embarrassed to think what visitors to our city think when they drive that route to and from O.R Tambo to the tourist areas of Joburg and Pretoria. I would like to see workers regularly cutting and spraying the island to keep it free of weeds and grass, which would not require expensive capital investment and would offer employment opportunities to many of the unemployed people in our city.

Travelling east on Republic Road, Randburg, between Forbes Road and Jan Smuts Avenue, on the left hand side there is a green sign(National?) directing traffic to "Joburg Iternational Airport". This can be misleading to visitors who may not know that this is the same as OR Tambo Airport. I ass it every day and it has been driving me nuts!

Just after the Nelson Mandela Bridge on the CBD there is an old derelict Transnet building that is an eye sore and a security risk. There is also an informal taxi rank that has settled there. I would like to suggest that Transnet refurbish this building and area or demolish it. I work for Absa in New Town and this area is a big smash and grab area for our employees driving to and from work every day.
There also seems to be an absolute sense of lawlessness from the taxi drivers who do not obey the rules of the road...but this is a seperate issue.

With the 2010 Joburg Municipality needs to do something about Gandi Square.
If you are a tourist visiting the country and wishing to travel by Metrobus around Jo-Burg.
There is no information about the bus services available and none of the bus stops have signs indicating where the buses go to at the relevent stops.
I think it time that we gear up towards the tourists and even for our local people.

Jhb could compile a simple "welcome manual" and distribute it to all residents. This would include how to interact with tourists, what our emergency numbers are, points of interest, information centres, etc. This should be targeted at residents not tourist so that we are able to assist tourists when they arrive.

Our parks (in Lenasia) and our roadsides in general are an eyesore because of litter. Much of this litter is recycleable (ie. glass, paper & plastic). My suggestion (as if no-ones thought of this before!!!) is to somehow reward deposits for recycling - like Vitality points for a depot at a Virgin Active gym perhaps? Fines for litterbugs are obvious but clearly not implementable (or are they?)

1.How about getting the government(public service) & labour unions to ensure that they do all their wage negotiations for next year way before the world cup to avoid industrial actions during the world cup.
2. Taxi hooting - (not quite worldcup related)- How about in conjuction with the department of Transport & Department of Safety a device of a different sound from the normal hooting sound is developed for the exclusive use by the taxis. That way we can keep the original sound for what it was intended for in the first place.

Surrounding areas such as Riverlea, Nasrec, Aeroton etc should have had community initiatives set up such that with minimal finance they could have been given the power to regenerate their surroundings with building schemes, cleanups, businnesses (tourism based) and improvment of vegetation. If you think about it the surrounding areas should have sufficient high class accomodation, parks, shopping malls and services but there are no such things that exist, there are various places where dumping of garbage is rife as well as exposed underground piping and services, rundown roads etc etc. the best solution at this stage is to involve the communities organise finance and give them a sense of pride in the surrounding areas by starting community building initiatives. all of this should have been done a long time before, after all the openeing game as well as final will be held there, we need to put out a very good impression to promote tourism. get the 702 listeneres involved lets have cleanups weekly or monthly. take a drive around the area and make a note of problems then list them on the site and awiat solutions from the listeners.

Any person can be taxi driver - regulate.

How often do you see street lights blazing away during the day? Although this is annoying in view of efforts to reduce electricity usage, it is worse at night when they are not on. I have no idea how street lights get turned on and off, but cannot imagine that it is too difficult to get them into synch with day and night.

Although much improved over the last 5 years or so, there are still times when the air has a strong sulphurous stench (very similar to the smell around Sasolberg). It was very strong at 01h30 on the 5th March. Most of us are probably oblivious to this unpleasant odour, but visitors will certainly notice it and be left with the impression that our air is strongly polluted.

With the expected influx of foreigner drivers, I would like to suggest that there should be a tightening up of regulatory signage on our roads. For example, leaving Johannesburg on the R24 just after passing Settlers Park on the right, there is no indication of an increase in the speed limit (I assume it goes up to 120kph). Likewise when returning to Johannesburg on the R24, the last sign indicates a limit of 80kph - I am sure that there should be a 60 sign somewhere before getting to the traffic lights with Allum.
Very often, following a decreased limit for roadworks, there is no indication that the restriction has come to an end.

Corner Ysterhou/Hans Schoeman and President Fouche in Bodkruin there is an area adjacent to the newly built Shell Garage that is a total eye sor. There used to be Post Boxes there which were removed during the building period. The area is also a pick-up point for casual labourer as well as an informal taxi rank in the late afternoon. Being a pick up point, there are always guys hanging about hoping to get work. The litter and mess there is absolutely awful and getting worse by the day. Thea area needs a total clean up and perhaps a revamp - benches or seating for the labourers and commuters. Another problem is the rain run-off from the adjacent vacant plot after heavy storms. Thank you very much for this way of repoerting problem areas.

Traffic light at a very busy intersection of Viljoen street and Hendrik Potgieter opposite Ruimsig Country Estate has not yet been activated after almost 3 years resulting in massive delays in traffic towards Silver Star casino and back on Hendrik Potgieter road in Ruimsig. This falls under Mogale traffic authority and seems to be a political issue as Ruimsig Estate erected and paid for the traffic light without proper authority. But now, a whole community is punished by turning a former straight road into a 4-way stop. This is a major route and will most certainly be used during 2010.

Please can something be done regarding the litter in the new corner parks on the corner of Malibongwe and Bel Aires Drive in North Riding. Many people sit there on the weekends and just dump their litter everywhere.
Also you now need a 4x4 or a tank to make your way down roads like Hyperion road and Blanford Road in North Riding. The road keeps getting patched up and within a few days new MASSIVE potholes have formed. The tar simply gets shovelled up and dumped onto the pavement. This looks terrible and is highly unsafe as you either run the risk of a head on collision with someone traveling in the opposite direction swerving around another donga or hitting the pothole because the street lights dont work and damaging your car.
Another issue is that the pavements along Bel Air Drive are not maintained and keep getting dug up by the counsel and never fixed up properly. e.g. they began changing the drains down Bouvet Drive in North Riding last year, this still has not been completed and the sand etc keeps washing into the road.

RHODES PARK situated on the cnr. Cumberland and Ocean streets, Kensington, on a main route to Eastgate Shopping Centre, close to Ellis Park Stadium. Is definitely one of the green areas in Johannesburg that would be a wonderful space for 2010 visitors and South African Soccer fans to take a break from the screaming crowds. Stately trees, offering shade from our African sun. Grass slopes where those soccer fans could kick a ball around. A wide variety of bird life giving the 2010 visitors a taste of what South Africa has to offer. The restaurant would give the weary traveller a place to quench their thirst and fill their bellies, while creating employment.
Let them go home with many wonderful memories of South Africa and a positive image of nation that takes pride in their green areas.
Rhodes Park at present is dirty, unsafe and in a rapid state of deterioration. The park which is currently home to outjies, frequented by thugs and prostitutes who bring their clients to the car parks. There is NO lighting as it has all been vandalized. The stepping stones are broken. The water ways are filthy, where perennials were always planted now grow weeds. The restaurant that use to be great to have a meal at is now lived in. Parties go on through the weekend with loud music and drinking. While the local speedsters utilize the car park as a skid pan.
So please choose our park. Let our visitors see how beautiful we really are. Make a park shine, make a city shine.

Since around 2003 we requested traffic lights to be installed at the above streets intersection. We have had numerous accidents, including myself. My car was a write off, thats how bad the accident was. just this past sunday there was a fatal accident involving a pedestrian.
We have writte to JRA, last year around Octiber/November they sent us a letter stating the following "The necessary surveys to determine these warrants have been concluded and in this instance, a traffic signal is warranted at this point in time.
This intersection has been placed on this Department’s priority list for the installation of traffic signals. It will now have to compete, on a priority basis, with other intersections for funds, when available.
WE hope that Radio 702 will assist in putting our request as a priority to the JRA. One life lost is one too many.

I probably come from one of the most wonderful suburbs in Johannesburg, Kensington. Like in other areas around the city the signs of degradation to our environment are showing, but instead of sitting back we need to get involved to reverse this trend, our suburb is the gateway to the Ellis Park Precinct and with 2010 coming up it is the ideal opportunity to make a real change to our area. What I propose is a greening of Kensington project through the identifying of four main roads to be focussed on, where indigenous plants are planted and maintained by volunteers from the community. What we require are donations of plants and compost, the marketing of the project will be done through the Kensington Residents association with the voluntary services of some enthusiastic folk.
Many Thanks for this brilliant opportunity for us as citizens to get dirctly involved in our communities and in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Brendon Burmester

Hi,
Being born in Scotland and brought up and worked in many places, the one thing that stands out for me that is such a simple advance to help with some of our Taxi and traffic problems, is having proper infrastructure for them to pick up and drop off from. Surely if we can expand the bus system, at the same time we can put in a mass of "Taxi Stops", some together with bus stops and some not.
Thes could have proper shelters, and bins, allow advertising, therefore generate income, would create jobs in construction and maintenance, and would generally help all motorists and taxi users in the country.
Costs? Minimal compared to the benefits, and remember income generating. Say suck of the thumb at R20,000 per stop (mass use of pre-fabbed concrete and absolutely standard design)times say 10,000 of to roll out in greater Gauteng to start = R200M.
Lots of sub ideas from this, but this is the basic idea.
All the best,

HOWEVER, why is it that the section after Corlett, extending to Buccleuh never gets cleaned, maintained or cared for? The grass on the verges is never cut and the weeds, now more like trees, growing out of the centre isle have not been cut for years! I cannot recall the lights after Grayston on/off-ramp until Buccleuh having worked for at least 2 years now.
I had heard that there is a dispte between JRA and the City as to who is responsible for this section of highway but in the interest of 2010 and our own civic pride, surely someone needs to ensure that this, most visible section of highway, is cleaned and fixed urgently?! Come on guys.

I recommend the following to help the flow of traffic and to assist tourists driving in South Africa:
I think it is vitally important that every corner of every intersection in every city in South Africa get an accurate road sign placed on it. So many intersections do not have signs or broken signs or road names painted on the sidewalk which are not always visible. A lack of proper street names causes enough confusion for South Africans already so I can only imagine how tourists will get lost during the World Cup.
I also recommend that municipal property next to the side of major roads get dug up reasonable intervals in order to create more taxi/bus stops. This will allow and encourage taxis to pull off the road more when dropping off passangers at will which is currently a hazard in our cities as is. Tourists do not understand taxis and I forsee a lot more minor accidents during the world cup if taxis keep stopping at will in a traffic lane to collect of drop off passangers.
The longevity of both of my suggestions is that they will help the general traffic flow in South African cities.

Hi John,
Please will you help me to arrange for street humps for Storms Road in Norkem Park Ext4. My 5 year old son was knocked by a speeding car on Easter Friday, not because he was on the road but the driver lost control at the curve of the road, mounted the pavement and knocked him at the house gate. The street is very busy, drivers are alwayhs at high speed there and there are kids playing there all there time. This road curve is between houses 77 and 83 Storms Road.
I will appreciate your help not only for me but to make the area safe for all who are using that road.

Good Morning John
I was cycling along the road yesterday morning with my partner, passed Pelindaba & around Hartebeespoort Dam doing a full circle. I was taken a back at how much litter is thrown down, hawkers left over stuff, boards all lying along the side of the road and in the veld. The whole place is looking crummy/scruffy,rough hangout and a bit run down. I havent been there in a while and was a bit sorry to see this state. The restaurants offer not the greatest of menus. (we wanted breakfast)at high prices apart from the Wimpy. The road is dangerous to cycle in many parts as the traffic travels at high speeds and no sign of traffic cops. The carnage on those roads must be horrendous.
I hope you could contact the relevant people to sort the area up.
Thank you

Good morning!
What we need is an integrated website, similar to www.tfl.gov.uk, but for the Greater Gaunteng.
As a tourist (or a citizen), I would like to enter my origin and destination, and have this service tell me which bus, which taxi, which train I need to take. As well as from where and at what time.
I have on numerous occasions tried to figure out the Metro Bus Service without success. I have only managed to figure out the taxis by asking some locals for assistance. The only public transport which is reasonably easy to figure out is the Metrorail. Kudos to them!
Yours Sincerely

I am a frequent visitor to the Kruger National Park. I do believe that this an asset that the country should promote and be proud of. 2010 tourist would definitely add this to their schedules.
I visited the park with my family over Easter and pre-booked for the day visits since I was staying outside the park. I had learnt on a previous visit over Easter that numbers are controlled and that you may not be able to get in for the day should the vehicle quota for the day be reached. Having this information I decided ahead of my visit to call and pre-book at a fee of R 20 per person.
On the 3 days that I entered there were long queues outside the gate with very irate and disappointed tourist been turned away.
My heart went out to kids and foreign tourist who were excited to visit the park only to be turned away.
The complaint of everyone was that they should have been informed about the need to pre-book in order to guarantee access and thus save them the disappointment as well as often long travel times.
The suggestion is simple can Kruger National Park not have a campaign to inform visitors that on certain public holidays the park may restrict numbers of people who attend and that they are advised to pre-book to guarantee entry. This surely can be done on their website as well as informing tour operators and including information on tourist pamphlets and publications.
I am certain that this will be the situation on the 25 and 26 April as well as the June 16 long weekend. It will also do the country and the park immense damage in reputation given the likely increases expected ion tourist next year.
I am certain that this is easy to address and will be sorted out.

The signage on the M1 and M2 highways are over 40 years old and really showing their age. With the current highway improvement programme (on the N routes only) I think the JRA should do likewise on the M1 and M2 and replace these old signs. Around Denver and Cleveland on the M2 there are places with no signs at all! Come on JRA, and clean up the highways while you are about it for our many 2010 visitors.

While the Market Theatre is great, Mary Fitzgerald Square and many surrounding streets are in total darkness with especially those new street lights that resemble smoke stacks not working. The lights on top of the Nelson Mandela Bridge do not work. The whole area was very deserted and forbidding. Better lighting would help alot. Mary Fitzgerald Square itself has blue lights set into the square itself that are in the formation of the night sky that was on 27 April 1994 and its a real shame that this cannot be shown off because the lights are not working.

The weeds growing on the sides and in the middle of the motorways are ramapant, take note of the middle island between Corlett Drive and Grayston Drive. This makes a terrible impression on our visitors. It will be easy for the municipality to put together a cleaning team, move through all the highways and clean up the weeds. They should use a weed killer to ensure that the weeds do not return, and can collect all the litter at the same time.

Dear John,
I think the Confed Cup has given us an opportunity to continue with the ticketing system it used for the duration of the next PSL season. In order to prevent potential conflict at PSL matches, I would like to suggest the following:
1. This system be uncompromisingly used at all the venues that will host the World Cup 2010.
2. Fans start buying tickets as a group so that they can be seated together in the open stands, a common complaint with allocated seating.
3. Computicket and all these ticket outlets allocate sectors to teams, and ask fans whether they are Chiefs/Pirates or whichever opposing teams are playing so that they can be seated in the right stand, with their friends.
4. PSL games be used to ensure that taxis are compliant with the rules of 2010 by allowing them to sell ticket & transport packages for fans, which would also allow the taxi to get to the designated drop-off-pick-up zone. The condition however is that the said taxi must be roadworthy and compliant with the minimum standards for 2010.
5. Taxis can assist stadium security by already refusing to pick up guys who are carrying alcohol ore are already inebriated and therefore will cause a disturbance at the stadium.
6. Taxi operators to be give brochures and other info on the ticketing system for 2010 in different languages so that ordinary communters can become used to this sytem by the time the World Cup gets here.

one issue for me about the confed cup was resales. we know it is illegal to resell tickets, but what if you end up with a spare (as we did on more than one occasion) or alternatively, if someone gets to the game and has left their ticket at home (again happened to us). You end up with these shady characters sellign tickets in dark corners of the stadium for rediculous amounts (we had guys trying to sell us a R70 ticket for up to R1000 on Sunday at Loftus. Surley there can be some legal mechanism whereby if i have a spare, i can go to the ticketeing centre at the grounds and sell it, via the office, to anyone who arrives looking for a ticket. this way the tickets are sold at face value, the ticketing centre can make a small admin fee to cover their costs, and everyone is happy. Surely this will stop the black market tickets at the grounds, and get rid of these shady character in dark overocats at the game? It really should be quite simple. The ticket centre should also be able to verify that i am the person who bought the original ticket before allowing me to sell it on to someone, and thereby remove the risk of counterfeight tickets being sold at the grounds as well?

HI
I attended the match yesterday (22/06/2009) at loftus between Brazil and Italy, I got there early and after a while we had a few people come to us saying that we are sitting in their seats, upon investigation we realised that our tickets were duplicated or double booked, this then caused a bit of chaos and some sat on the steps at the stadium, at half way through the second half a steward came and tried to re-arrange the seating again and that caused further problems as we could not watch the game and after that wanted us to go through to ticket office to rectify the problem bearing in mind that the game was going on, this was completely uncalled for and spoilt the game for a lot of us,
I do want to commend the park and ride system that was used though, it was excellent and efficient, it is undoubtedly more efficient then that of ellis park.

Hi John
I would just like to bring to your attention the problem with seating at Loftus stadium for the confederations cup games. The seats have big puddles of water on them, also some seats have huge holes in them which renders them unusable. I can understand the water puddles on the seat had there been a rainstorm but considering there was no rain in pretoria I find that totally unacceptable.I am very impressed with the general organisation of the tournament including the park and ride system which is a pleasure to use but the fact that the seating at loftus is well below par leaves me with a bitter taste in the mouth. I hope you can assist by forwarding this to the relevant authorities so that it may be sorted out in time for the world cup.

Hi
We went to the Egypt v Italy match yesterday and the experience was thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was electric and organization within the grounds and security was good. We never felt unsafe or threatened at anytime.
There was however one major hiccup which almost spoiled all the fun and the experience. I found the Park and Ride from the stadium to be totally chaotic and unorganized. There was no crowd control, no marshals or stewards in sight.
I think that to improve the situation an aisle system needs to be introduced to get the crowd in to an orderly que and then onto Buses/Taxis. There also needs to be fencing that cannot be breached by returning fans who lastnight went to the buses and taxis, that were waiting to pick up passengers at the designated pickup points, and forced their way onto the transport.
I also think that there needs to be a seperate que for Kids and their parents as some kids need to get to school the next day, and there is also a crushing risk with kids. There were many people who simply did not see my kid due to his height and size and had it not been for me he would have probably been hurt many times.

Dear John. When traffic lights at major intersections in Joburg remain working in wet weather I will know that we are ready for 2010! Its a problem locals have sadly grown to accept. With the increased transport needs of over half a million 2010 visitors to and from: stadiums, hotels, restaurants, airports, etc. the failure of robots in bad weather will at best, be a nuisance and at worst, put the safety of tourists unfamilar with our roads, in danger. Imagine if SWC 2010 in Jhb is remembered not for the glorious time had, but by delayed matches, flights missed, tourists injured in accidents, grid-locked cities, etc. Closing schools and BRT is not the answer, -please lets leave a lasting legacy of solar powered robots for local Joburgers to enjoy after the last visitor has gone! I attended the warm up match to up and coming the confederation cup between Italy and New Zealand last night. The match was held at the Atteridgeville stadium in Pretoria West. I have a few concerns that I would like to address. You are trying to clean up the city and make South Africa a beautiful, clean and safe city by 2010. But I think there are much larger issues that should be addressed.
The match last night was at the relatively new Soccer stadium built in Pretoria west to host events such as large football events (the home of the football club SuperSport United). The Stadium has the capacity to seat just under 29,000 people. The stadium was I woukd say 1/4 full last night, partly due to the bad weather, the busses left Johannesburg from all the Italian Clubs and transported I would say 95% of the crowds to the stadium. Upon arrival, the security gaurds did not check our stubs thoroughly, I could have got into the stadium with an old Super Bike ticket stub. Once inside the stadium there were no refreshments available, even the drinking taps were not functioning. No vendors were on the premises selling food or snacks of any sort. THe lavatories had no toilet paper and the toilets were completed blocked up and unusable.
This concerns me, If this is a glimpse of the next two weeks with the confederation cup or even the world cup next year, I would be mighty embarrased to call myself a South African.
I believe the organisers of this event should be targeted and should have to answer for their poor planning skills.

Cosmo City is a development North of JHB. Although the area is over 4 years old, we still do not have street signs indicating area where drivers must be aware of pedestrians, speed limits and signs that the conservation area is a no dumping area. On the 25th July 2009 I attended a funeral in Soweto Dobsonville. I was shocked when we arrived at the cemetery which is situated along side the Roodepoort road next to Braamfischerville outside Dobsonville. The road that leads to the gate of the cemetery is bad especially when you are thinking about someone special that you have lost. Driving through that road was a pain because it is very bumpy with sharp stones which could damage vehicles. The worst nightmare was when we confronted a ditch which runs across the road and it looked like a little dam and it caused a big traffic jam which was unnecessary. In my own assessment it will not cost the municipality more R50, 000 to address the problem. I urge the City of Johannesburg to respect the dead.

In order to avoid visitors getting lost during the world cup (and South Africans in the future)I recommend road signs get placed on poles on every corner of every intersection in cities and towns in SA. Getting around is often difficult in the cities as road signs have been knocked down or the signs on the roads have washed away or damaged by construction. I really think this will be money well spent for the general upliftment of the country’s roads.

It was filled with a bad history of forced removals, BUT also a had a vibrant rich culture of mixed races, best places to go bargain hunting, from buying shoes to groceries. The area is called Vrededorp or Fietas as many will know it. With reference of one of the most remembered street in a suburb in Johannesburg called 14 th street. I had thought it good to approach the "Fly the flag" project as Vrededorp "Fietas" is on the route where the BRT and many modes of transport will be traveling to and from various 2010 World cup venues. Main arterial roads passing this suburb in particular Solomon street (Note this road also by pass Wits University’s soccer field and is on route to Johannesburg University’s Bunting Road campus, this road has a lot of concrete walls (with loads of ugly graffiti) set up due to the area being a semi residential/Industrial area. It will be a great idea if these walls (Murals) can be painted by graphic designers to reflect, the theme, the flags and players ect taking part in the 2010 soccer world cup. If the walls are painted professionally and tasteful this will not only beautify ugly gray walls but add and enriching a culturally rich area with added and lasting history for the next future generations of the area.

Thank you. This is a great initiative!Keep up the good work!

A few days ago, I submitted a complaint regarding the amount of trash on the verges and along the centre island of the R24 from Bruma onto the N12 towards Boksburg. This morning on my way to work, I noticed that a clean up has begun! Well done, it makes me proud to be a South African when I see responses like this!!!

The road to and from ORT airport is very unattractive. This is the gateway to Johannesburg and Pretoria. Is it possible to plant evergreen indigenous trees and plants such as aloes etc to make the roads look more attractive? Whilst there are places where not much can be done, the section of rod towards Eastgate/Bedfordview should be looked at. Look at the N4 in Pretoria as an example. The trees and bushes are simple and do not require much maintenance or water.

From the Allendale intersection to the Woodmead intersection there is no road marking.
When coming up to Allendale Road in the morning the sun is in your eyes and it is vey difficult to stay on the correct side of the road. Also there is a major "pothole" on the section around the Jukskei bridge that has been repaired a number of times that is a major threat to traffic. It is marked with a pothole sign on both sides of the road

It seems that the main roads and highways are not maintained any longer. Street lights are not working.Majority of the manhole covers are missing. Roads are not cleaned. I travel around Alberton and JHB. The highway interchange near the CBD i.e, M2,Risk st off ramp, double decker, and all the sorrounding areas are a disgraceful condition. The R59, N&S ( Befrore it joins the N12) is also in a state. Dirt, overgrown grass, missing manholes covers, for over six years now. Have reported to the council, but no response. All the roads that I travel in Alberton have non working street lights. Hennie Alberts st, Overburry st, Michelle ave, Rae Franklin, etc. Surely these are basic maintenance issues that can easly be addressed, especially when we are about to host the world in a number of months. If there is any person I should contact in this regard, I will gladly do so, and furnish further details. Thanks.

Issue:
Pavement was dug up some years ago - there is still a huge ditch (approx 2m deep x 1,5m wide) on the pavement all along the road. There is a mound about 2m high all along the ditch. Not only is this unsightly, but dangerous too.

On 18 June, I witnessed a pedestrian being hit by a car at the intersection of Perth and 4th avenue in Westdene.
Apart from problems reporting it to our ambulance “service” who cannot seem to spell/speak English,
The pedestrian seemed ok but wasn’t able to get up.
The problem is that this traffic light has been broken on several days during the last month, as it was this am.
The light stays green for the traffic on Perth, and never goes green for 4th ave traffic. This problem happens on average one day per week.
It then gets fixed, but reoccurs soon.
If you come out of 4th ave, you have to take chances to push onto the busy Perth road.
Unfortunately, the pedestrian that tried to do this today got hit and undoubtedly was seriously injured.
Could you help with getting the right people to look at this traffic light?

Opposite 15 Barossa Street Jhb Electricity have a sub-station. The gate protecting the facility is too low and is broken. We have complained many times of litter and garden waste being dumped in front of the door of the sub-station, but to no avail. Currently there is a pile of thatch blocking the door which is obiously a fire hazard and very dangerous. What this shows is that Jhb Electricity do no maintenance on their sub stations because they could not access it if they tried to. They do not care for the safety of residents otherwise they would secure it properly, and Pikitup don’t do their job properly.

Subject: Installation of street/flood lights on 8th Avenue in Alexandra
Attachments: Alex map.pdf
Importance: High
Dear Sirs,
I’m a resident of Phase One, 8th Avenue, Alexandra. For years we’ve raised a concern about the lack of lighting on 8th avenue between Rooseveld and Rooth streets and they have fallen to deaf ears. This area is notorious for all sorts of criminal activities not to mention the hostel and its tenants constantly overlooking the street below. The street, 8th Avenue, is one of the busiest and sort of a main road linking Alexandra with surrounding suburbs.
We appeal to City Power’s sense of delivery, particularly since they are currently doing some work in the area (Phase One) to provide a simple flood light/s on this dangerous street and hopefully give residents some peace of mind.
I would appreciate it if I could receive an acknowledgement of this request so that I can present it to fellow residents at our next meeting.
Many thanks,
Regards,

Alexandra Rd, Halfway House, Midrand - Directly ubder the N1 bridge where construction is taking place to widen the bridge. The road is so bad that even 4x4’s take it slowly, this impacts on the traffic turning right from Smuts into Alexandra. It is making me late for work and it is difficult to manouvre around the dongas, so it can damage the car rims (if not already). This also leads toit being treated as an alternating one way - real slow down/ halt. This morning we could not even see where the dongas were as it was covered in middy water. Gatvol!!! Your intervention will be greatly appeciated by myself and many other motorists. Thank you making this "constructive" channel of communication available. (excuse the pun!)... While I’m at it there is an open manhole on the pavement on Van Heerden between 1st & 7th Rd. The pavement is in extremely bad condition, but the nanhole is my concern as we just consider our time trail a tough cross country course. It is behind Midrand High School and our running club operates from there. We know about it, but if anyone else runs/walks there or a small child or pet falls in that would be a disaster. We always tell new members about it so they don’t break a leg or ankle before there running career even starts. Somebody has made a stop gap solution and placed a heavy bag over the hole with a branch, so that it is visible. Thx again - Heather._

Between the Lion Park Intersection and past HeronBridge College the road is a death trap! The road is used by taxis from Diepsloot, trucks and buses and parents taking their children to and from school.Numerous complaints have been sent in to the relevant departments but to no avail.Tourists will also be travelling along Cedar Rd toward Sun City on this route.
The first small change which would make a huge difference is at the intersection of Cedar Road and the Lion Park Road, a three way stop could be made with just a little paint!
My husband was one of the many people involved in accidents along this route and was hit by a bus from behind..thank goodness after the children were dropped off at school and although his car is a right off he was ok.
The road is in desperate need of widening and resurfacing.I do know the school has been workimg tirelessly to have some changes made with no success.

On many of Joburg’s roads there are illegal adverts on the trees, lamppposts and roadsigns and stuck to any flat surface. It would beautify the neighbourhoods if these were removed. Fortunately the "criminals" who illegally post these adverts leave their contact details, so it could be an exercise where the work-force is paid by fines received.

The surface of the roadway on William Nicholl in Bryanston on the lanes heading NW (to Fourways) before the Grosvenor intersection is a disaster. The top layer of the road is almost completely eroded and there are potholes and loose gravel all over the road. This is probably caused by heavy vehicles slowed by the traffic lights. Hi guys, I own a business at Dunswart Station which is situated on the the corner of Railway Street just behind Main Reef Road. The roads leading to the main building has pot holes and has required attention for the past two years. Many attemps have been made by the various business owners however to date nothing has been done. Metro Rail has built a wonderful Taxi rank which is not being used by the taxi operators, they have created their own diversion affecting the business owners excess and thus continuously obstructing and interfering with deliveries. We have traffic coming from all direction with many illegal taxis. The taxis park where they wish, informal vendors are sprouting up and litter the place which is unsightly, informal vendors using various modes of cooking are selling unhygienic food which leaves a stench at the complex. The congestion also creates a target for crime and many outlets including mine has already been robbed. What we require at this station is a satellite police station which will assist in combating the problems. I would like to recommend that, the Tenants get involved and let them take charge and look after the place. I would not mind helping and getting involved.
I would also like to recomend that we ask the tannents

A lighting pole has fallen over onto a tree and is very dangerous as it could fall on the road.It has been like this for several months. There is also a manhole cover missing in the road.

1. Winston Road (Robin Hills): In front of house # 28, there is a water leak that has previously and still is, causing the collapse of the road - pothole. They have tried to repair it several times, but have not managed to do so properly.
2. The street lights in front of the Kings School (also Winston Road, Robin Hills) were on at 16h30 this afternoon.
3. The substation fence at the "Scout Hall" Park in Cherry Drive, is broken on the side facing the park, and I have at times seen washing hanging on that fence - a sign of occupation...
4. There is a manhole cover to the sewer connection at the Scout Hall (Robin Hills) which has been shifted, and the exposed hole is a public hazard.
5. The entrance and exit to the Medicross clinic at the corner of Malibongwe & Rabie, is a hazard to this very busy intersection. It certainly does not seem to be in keeping with the general JRA policies, that I know of.

The residents of Derby Road, Northriding have been constantly contacting the JRA for the past 15 years for the 400 meters of Derby Road to be tarred to no avail. We have even emailed their hotline with no response. We only received street lights 4 years ago.
The monies from the developments have been paid over for the tarring of the road which we were informed had been used in more desperate areas.
The dirt road is in a disgusting state with holes which of course causes damage to cars. Not only this, cars speed including a few taxi’s down this road causing a constanct dust storm which effects the pedestrians walking to work along this road on the verges as there are no pathways. They actually have to cover their faces to prevent inhalation of dust. It is a very busy road as it is all complexes. Not only this, they are now building a school on the corner of Derby/Bellairs/Hyperion which will increase the traffic.
Please could you assist by contacting JRA.

The number of vehicles, from cars to taxis to trucks that simply do not stop or even slow down at this intersection is absolutely staggering, as well as the speed these guys travel at. I have just had visitors staying with me in Sandton for the Con Fed Cup. They hired a car but found it terrifying to drive here.
1. They got lost due to road names being non-existant on even major roads.
2. Total lack or clear road markings. In Europe they have cats eyes which clearly mark the roads at night.
3. Turning lanes not clearly marked or not marked early enough to allow you to get into the correct lane.
4. Terrified by the total lack of filter lights especially at main intersections, forcing them to cross against a red light.
5. Total fear of the Taxi’s, never had they seen vehicles that carry the general public drive so badly. They had never seen a taxi drive on the wrongside of the road in the face of on coming traffic before. Taxi’s Cutting infront of them from both the right and left turning lane. Taxi’s that totally ignored lane markings, traffic lights, dangerous stopping, making their own lanes even though it caused gridlock at the intersections.
6. The only time the saw the "traffic cops" was at the football games and generally they were standing around.
I have agreed to drive them if they come back for 2010, they won’t hire a car again and they certainly would never use a taxi.
Road sections that seriously need attention are:
Rivonia & Kelvin : Neotel/Escom/JRA/WaterDept have all dug up the pavements and roads. Paving stones are left in piles every where but never replaced. It is impossible to walk on these "pavement areas"
Rivonia Road from Alon to Witkoppen Rd : the pavements again have been destroyed Neotel/Escom etc.
Kelvin Drive from Bryanston Drive to where Kevin becomes Woodlands and meets the R55 Woodmead. Again Kelvin urgently needs filter lights on both East/West and North/South, peak times traffic forced to cross against red light.
Kelvin & Bowling all filters need time extended to cope with peak traffic flow.
Woodlands & Woodmead - All filter times need to be extended to cope with peak time traffic. At the moment the traffic gridlocks from 3.30pm at Woodlands/Western Service Road & Woodmead.
Kelvin through to Woodlands to Woodmead Neotel/Escom/JRA/Water Dept have destroyed pavement areas again leaving paveing stones strewn everywhere.
Kelvin Bridge - Escom dug a trench across Kelvin Road after they filled there is now a dangerous bump across the road like a speed hump and cars swerve to avoid it.
Kelvin Bridge - Piles of paving stones crowd pavements, bridge concrete railings are broken and the pallisaide fencing broken.
Please please make the Companies or Municipalities repair our roads and pavements after they have dug them up, its criminal that money was spend on kilometres of roads and pavements only to have them destroyed.

Hello.
In the past few months my street (Peter Str., Eldorado Park ext.9) has deteriorated to almost a gravel road. With many potholes and loose tar and stones. On more then 5 occasions I have reported this to the JRA and the local municipality but nothing very minimum has been done about it.2 or 3 workers will come out and only fix 1 pothole or patch a 600mm squares in the road that need not being fixed.
I would like my road to be retard or at least have some senior road engineer to come out and have a look at it and indicate what the way forward is. As it is on the brink of collapsing. I don’t even use this road any more because you have to dodge so many potholes and stones.
Please we need some assistance.

About August last year work started on the corner of Ronderbult and Rietfontein Roads, Boksburg, to create a left turning lane. The kerbstones are in place and the road has been tarred. It took at least 5/6 months to reach that stage. But the drain and the manhole cover -which used to be on the pavement is now in the middle of the lane and stands about 30cm higher than the road surface. Orange traffic cones with red and white plastic tape surround the raised portion. So actually the left hand lane is still of no use to the road user. This is a notorious corner for accidents as both road are very busy. If you could pull a string or two in the Ekuruleni Municipality, I’m sure thousands of road uses would be eternally greatful.

Recently, a fantastic series of green metal litter bins have been concreted into some of the main walkways in Bedfordview (Ekhuraleni), at very regular intervals and at all four corners of intersections. This has lead to a visible reduction in litter in the area. I would like for a similar initiative to happen in neighbouring Kensington (JHB muncipality)where there is a problem with litter.

Long-standing and seriously dangerous potholes in Allum road (near cnr of Langerman), and Langerman Drive (near cnr of Allum) in kensington, JHB. The water leak has finally been fixed, but the road has not been retarred and is gradually reverting to dongas. At the first rain, these will become dangerous again.
In addition to having these fixed (my calls to 375-5555, and 298-5000 have been disconnected, and/or gone unanswered) I would like to suggest an improvement to the process: when the dept responsible for fixing water leaks has finished, they should automatically send a job card or notification to the dept responsible for fixing the road. It amazes me that this does not seem to be part of the automatic process.

we went to all confed games and used bez park for park and ride which improved as the tournament progressed. some additional ideas for further improvement:
1. when we alighted the bus in bertrams there was building rubble on the pavement the area around the dropoff and pickup needs to be cleaned up and where necessary level pavements need to be erected as we dont need people stmbling around in the dark.
2. the pick up points in berttrams need to be clearly signed and improved queuing aids to be introduced bearing in mind large number of people after the game.
other ideas:
1. issue rsa flags at rsa group games(esp opening) this was done at cricket and rugby recently AND/OR vuvazelas to have flags attached similar to ceremonial trumpets - could even attach other countries flags and sell zelas to visiting fans

- the road surface and kerbs (North corner) have be out of order at Eighth and Jan Smuts, again for months.

Hi there,
I live in Pranticole Avenue in Allens Nek in Roodepoort. You won’t find Pranticole Avenue on a map so best to explain where this is would be to say it is just of Jim Fouche when travelling from Hendrik Potgieter (same street where the Piki-tup Garden Refuse Removal site is).
On the corner of Jim Fouche and Pranticole avenue there is an open piece of undeveloped veld. This area is strewn with rubbish and building rubble and no one seems to clean this up. I have personally taken refuse bags and tried to clean the area, but within a week it looks terrible again and it doesn’t seem as if the municipality will ever clean it.
Is there a way whereby this area can be cleaned, and added to a schedule for regular cleaning? Jim Fouche is a high-traffic zone and this dirty open veld is an eyesore for all passing by.
Thanks

Hi there. I live in Glenvista, South of Johannesburg on Vorster Avenue. The road is used by learners walking to and from Glenvista High School. most of the entrances to the properties on that road opposite the country club are concealed. The problem is the high speed that motorist travel with due to the lack of speed humps. There has been a number of accidents some of which resulted in deaths. It is very crucial that speed humps are erected from the traffic circle at the entrance to Glenvista all the way up to the Glenvista shopping centre to prevent further accidents from occuring.

A complaint was made with JRA and the necessary authorities about the speeding traffic during peak hours on Kimberley Road, Robertsham (parallel to M1)near Gold Reef City. This is often used as an alternate road due to the congestion on the freeway but the problem is that it is a residential road. There have been many accidents and a few months ago there was also a fatality with a taxi driver ploughing into the fence of a home killing himself. The authorities decided to put in a traffic circle at the junction with Harry Street which has done nothing to calm the traffic as firstly the traffic circle is way off centre, exposing the lane going north - taxis and cars speed through the circle at 100km/h. Secondly due to the morning traffic at the local mosque with worshippers coming and leaving, it causes more problems and has caused accidents. The best option is to calm traffic down to the requisite 60km/h through speed bumps or similar measures because the current measure is simply a waste of time and money. Please come and see for your self or I will send a photo.
Thanks for your efforts...

A residential complex was built in honeydew not too far from the police station. we were not given a proper entrance to the complex as there were disputes regarding who’s responsibility it was to tar the road. It has now been close to a year since I have moved in and we have had to use a shabby gravel road which is extremely dark and not well maintained.
Is it not the responsibility of the JRA to either get these funds from the builders of the complex and arrange for the road to be built as per their spec since the complex is in their area or to just organise to build the road as we are rates and tax payers living at that complex? The complex body corporate is constantly calling the JRA and being given the run around with no one actually doing anything about the problem.
The complex is called The Wedge. It is situated at Cnr Carmen and Bundary roads. It is next Jackal creek golf estate.

Furthermore, at the other end of Taurus st, a stop sign at the t-junction with Puttick Ave has been removed and the white "stop" on the tar painted over in black. City Parks have on occassion come in and cleared out the vagrants, however within days they return. The situation is of great concern to the residents, but do not seem to be having much joy from City Parks. It would be most appreciated if you could exert some pressure on our behalf.

As residents of Melville we regularly fund graffiti cleaning projects at our own cost and it is very expensive all we are asking is that council also bring their bit to the table to make our suburb presenable for our visitors. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks very much.

The state of cleanliness of the buses transporting people to and from the airoplanes are shocking, maybe ACSA can employ 100 people to clean these buses, windows and general condition. This will help the job creation Pres Zuma needs before end of the year. Stay positive about our Country - clean her up.

Two small problems in our neighbourhood which need attention please:
1. A water leak at the bottom of Majuba Lane in Morningside, which Jhb Water will not fix. I reported it to them on 1 June 2009 (ref 3331234). I have followed up with them at least five times since then, but nothing gets done. They even sent me an sms on 22 July to say that they had fixed it (!) but thousands of litres are lost every day. Pedestrians have to walk on planks on to get through the gate in the fence next to the leak.
2. A motor vehicle crashed in to a concrete waste bin on the corner of Coleraine and Vincent Rds in Duxberry a month or two ago. The bin lies broken on the side of the road and needs to be replaced by Pikitup please.
Many thanks for the assistance.

If it wasn’t for the attentiveness of other drivers, accidents would deffinitely have happened. Please do the following (A) Orange flashing lights warning of the three-way stop. Although this road has a speed limit of 60kms this is unfortunately never adhered too with motorists speeding and particularly motor bikes well in excess of 120kms at all times of the day. Residents in the area and particularly Kelly Road have been asking for (B) speed restriction bumps and (C)double white lines to reduce speeding on this dangerous road. It will only be a matter of time before a serious accident occurs particularly with motorists not stopping at the intersection. Over the last month I have reported the problem a total of 6 times, with no resolution as of yet. The lights on the corner of C.R.Swart and Ouklip heading towards Roodepoort stays green for only 15 seconds (trust me, I have sat there for over 20 minutes so have had plenty of time to time it), and the arrow that has always been operational during rush hour morning traffic has not worked for over a month. One traffic light has already been crashed into because people trying to turn from C.R.Swart onto Ouklip have to take a chance when the light changes, or risk sitting there for an inordinate period of time. The traffic gets backed up so badly that it affect the traffic coming up the very dangerous Doreen road hill. People turning right onto Ouklip are mostly taking little ones to school or one of the various creches in the area, are the powers that be waiting for the death of a child before they will respond to the requests to have the arrow switched back on and the timing of the lights reset? The traffic light that has been crashed into has also not been replaced, and this after 4 days of being in this state. Contacting Johburg Direct has been an exercise in futility as has reporting the problem to the traffic section on 702. Any help would be appreciated as there are no detours one can take to avoid the backup and people skipping the traffic light just to be able to turn.

Plesae could you assist us in putting forward a request to the JRA for them to come and tarr Derby Road in Northriding. The road remains half tarred and we have not been able to get a straight answer from either the JRA or municipality on the issue. We have paid our contribution towards the tarring of teh raod, but have since been sent from pillar to post on the matter. We have also been told that, should we decide to tarr the road ourselves, we will forfeit any maintenance of the road by JRA going forward. Not only have we lost our contribution to the system, we continue to pay our rates and taxes to the City and yet our stretch of the road remains an environmental risk, as it creates far too much dust from motorists that travel at high speeds on the road, as well as damage to the residents vehicles.
Please we request that 702 and John Robbie assist us as we have tried everything to get a 300m stretch of road tarred.

A few items as below requiring attention on the corner of Main Road and Westminister Ave Bryanston. At this corner on main rd the traffic island was beautified and fancy advertising boards erected for confed cup and i assume for 2010. it is a great pity that the following items have detracted from the 2010 improvement:
1. the vacant stand at the corner has become an illegal dump site and generally looks a mess as well as being a potential health hazard with i’m sure rats in abundance! my daughter has reported this to various council depts (pikitup to health) with no luck - please help! a clean up and the pavement both on main and westminister to be sorted in support of the "neat" traffic island.
2. On the traffic island itself , where beautification took place a hole was dug and then nothing done ie hole and rubble has been left for plus minus 6 weeks. also the clean up that occurred on the island adjacent to beautification resulted in heaps of refuse which have not been collected and finally something i am not sure anything can be done about but it seems that someone is raiding these advertising sites (not only main rd) and removing the white border stones - can you believe it!

I have send and e-mail to the National roads agency to enquire what the situation is on the N14, close to the Gauteng Provincial border, between Krugersdorp and Ventersdorp. I know this falls out of the JRA’s area, but this road has now been closed for well over a year, if it is not longer, due to a sinkhole in the middle of the road. We use this road every month, as this is the only road going to Lichtenburg and Mafikeng from Krugersdorp and it carries quite a substantial amount of traffic. They have created a bypass in the direction of Cartletonville, which is a nuisance in the first place and secondly this bypass now also has a sinkhole and everyone has to go on a gravel road to pass.
I feel that it is unacceptable that nothing has been done to rectify this problem on a National Road (N14) for over a year, but enough trouble is made to throw piles of sand and dig trenches to prohibit people driving along the side of this sinkhole. It is after all a National Road and I can’t imagine what is stalling the process.
To date I havent had any response or reply from the National Roads Agency.

The junction of Jan Smuts Avenue and Buckingham Avenue, Craighall Park is not only an ugly eyesore it is downright dangerous. The Johannesburg Road Agency appear to be unable or unwilling to make good the road at the end of Buckingham Avenue, (which was dug up some months ago). This is permanently full of pot holes and very dangerous not to mention the damage inflicted on motor vehicles.
To add insult to injury the pavement was dug up at the same time as the road and bricks are still lying around, the traffic barriers look as though they are ready to fall down at any moment. In short the area looks like a bomb site.
As mentioned in my Subject heading this is a main arterial into Craighall Park, but it is also right on Jan Smuts Avenue. Can you imagine what sort of impression this is likely to give visitors to our country. Its bad enough when locals come to visit when to avoid embarassment I try and direct them to use other roads.
The Craighall Residents Association are tearing their hair out at the lack of progress and this lies fairly and squarely the responsibility of the JRA who it appears don’t have any money to pay for tar, but it would seem plenty to pay for fancy cars and lavish functions. See email below from the Ward Councillor.
Hi June
Believe you me, I echo everything you say. The CRA has been working on this and other problem areas. The CRA chairman, Ralf, has been in negotiations with Caxton (producers of the Rosebank Killarney Gazette and the other community newspapers) and Caxton have said that they will sponsor an upgrade of the pavement area.
Another CA exec member, Sandra Dewes, has submitted a design to Caxton and as far as I’m aware, this plan is in progress. I’m not sure if eg we’re waiting for any City Council approval but I do know that the negotiations have included the manager/owner? of The Willows Centre so we’re all really hoping that before the year is out, there will be a significant improvement. As soon as we have absolute clarity, we will report this in a CRA newsletter – so you have a preview! Perhaps Ralf and Sandra, to whom I’ve copied this note, can add to this.
As for the state of our roads, the CRA is constantly in touch with the JRA and our Ward Councillor. I have just received a media release from the DA on the performance of the JRA - I’ll forward that to you just now. It is an inditement on City management. The CRA doesn’t believe in being confrontational – far better to work in an atmosphere of cordial relationships – but there is much to be concerned about. We may need to further consider how to improve service delivery.
Best wishes

Hi, I have been complaining to Joburg Connect and JRA for the past six months to get them to fill a trench across the road in 1st avenue, Kew. I do not have my old ref numbers but the last one from May 2009 is 230331. I have sent emails to HOTLINE and I spoke to Saooda. She asked me to speak to the Manager Randy. I have been speaking to Randy for over a month and everytime he gives me a different story on the problem. Every time he says he will get the contractor to fix the problem. This deep trench across the road is damaging my car tyres and also my car suspension. The people at the top at JRA should drive down Louis Botha Ave from Athol road to Marlboro Drive and they will see how this city’s roads are going from bad to worse. The contractors do not have basic skills or equipment. There was a hole dug on Louis Botha in front of the Standard Bank. The workers filled the hole and just put tar over the hole. It was not compacted or leveled. So now you drive over a dip in the road. Can someone please contact me urgently to resolve this issue.

Firstly thank you so much to all at 702 for this great initiative to assist us all in making our country better. It would be so great if there is a turning arrow going right from Bellairs Drive onto Malibongwe Drive. There are turning arrows going every other side but not one for this. There is a large number of cars during the week and especially on weekends that turn right from Bellairs Drive. Due to there being no turning arrow, only one car at a time manages to go through hence causing the traffic on Bellairs to pile up. Because of cars trying to get onto Malibongwe Drive, there are a number of accidents due to the two lane from Olievenhout Road that comes onto Bellairs Drive. The two lanes from Olievenhout causes major traffic confusion.

Over the last 2 years and lately you would have noticed how City Parks are redoing the curbs, middle islands and surrounding areas on our main intersections and roads with plants, rockery etc.It does look great when they finish the project.Specially when you look back to what it was before. My issue is that there is no routine maintenance on these finished sites. As an example, let me use the intersection of Malibongwe & Olivenhout(near Branbury Crossing) and the middle island on Olivenhout all the way towards the dome. Plants were put in with new irrigation etc etc and now the whole section looks patchy and unkept. There are plenty of vagraints and informal traders who operate here as well. By laws need to enforced surely. City Parks have spent money on this project but they seem to have no teams looking after them. Closer to 2010, they will spend a few thousand rands to get the place "upgraded" and the cycle starts again. Its a waste.
What i could suggest is have City parks rangers with a team for every area. This in conjunction with Pikitup,Metro etc.Is it not possible for them to have weekly inspections on these places and ensure that they are in good shape. They need an effective system to be put in place to tidy up the streets and keep the standards up.Overall, the sides on all our major roads are in a bad state with over grown grass etc etc.We have far too many departments doing things!!! but at the end of the day no one is held accountable.
Just hope they will do something.
Thanks and Regards

In contrast the SA Natural History Museum across the street was looking really well kept and looked after. The vistor commented on the state of affairs and I had no words to explain except to prefusely apologise. THis is truely a disgrace and something that is easy to maintain. There has been a huge trench across the M16 shortly after where Club St becomes 8th St in Orange Grove (just after 10th Ave turn off) for at least a month. It is filled in with sand/gravel occasionally but that lasts about 36 hours only. It is only on the side of the road heading towards Louis Botha from Club St. Because people swerve into the lane for traffic coming the other way, there have been numerous near-crashes. Please address urgently! Many, many thanks!

Strewn plastic bottles, plastic bags, beer bottles, tins etc can be seen all around the waiting area at Taxi colletct and delivery points. Maybe the Council or Taxi Associations can provide some bins for the rubbish - i have not seen a lot of those around either!

I’ve reported a pothole as well as a stretch of road which needs to be re-tarred due to road works being done over a year ago and the section of road dug up never being re-tarred. Both are outside the Dunkeld Business Park, 6 North Road, Dunkeld West. The reference number given by JRA in May 2009 is 224035. I’ve made a follow up call to JRA and was told that they could not find the pothole and that the untarred stretch of road was due to roadworks. Despite mentioning to them that no roadworks had been done in over a year, to date, nothing has been done to fix the problems. The pothole is infront of the ’exit’ gate to the office park where we all have to drive round the pothole to leave the office park. Subsequently, I’ve noticed that there is a big hole in the road near a drain outside the same office park. Perhaps that could also be fixed as it poses a risk to motorists who may stop on the side of the road. Thank you.

Hi, myself and my wife visited the Hartebeespoortdam area this weekend and decided to take a walk out onto the dam wall. We were hounded by street hawkers, which I guess is a normalaity nowadays. However the stench from the dam, or just from the dam wall itself was unbearable, there was plenty of graffitti and rubbish lying around .While we were there a hawker relieved himself against the arch structure. If this area could be cleaned and neatened up it would be a very nice attraction.... at the moment though we couldn’t wait to get off the wall.

Hello; I reported a water leak in Randpark Ridge to City Water on Friday August 19, 2009 (ref. 3520045)with no response; I reported it again on Friday August 29 (ref 3538074) and have yet again not received any response. The problem is a water leak coming from an underground spring with the water streaming across my driveway and into a nearby drain. The stream of water is constant, as a result it is not only corroding the tarmac but causes leaves to congest and turn into sludge. Please can someone assist in terms of what other action I can take. Many Thanks Karen Viviers

A large sink hole with cracks across the road surface adjoining developed outside the entrance to the Wedgwood Green complex at the bottom of Sovereign Street, on the border of Bedfordview/Kensington, some six weeks ago.My husband reported it to the Joburg Roads Agency and within a couple of days the area had been cordoned off, excavations done and the water drained from the small lake that had developed. Since then it appears that absolutely nothing is being done. There is a piece of earth-moving equipment, which is occupied at night by a watchman, who spends his days leaning on the plastic barrier around the large hole, gazing at the traffic. A rather permanent looking sign has been erected approaching the area, which informs the driver of roadworks ahead and apologises for the inconvenience. As the big hole is just past the entrance to Reddam House school and on the main approach to the Bedford Centre, this is considerable, especially as the road has been reduced from three lanes to two. This weekend another sign was added "Residents only". Could 702 please investigate this situation and perhaps get someone to put on some semblance of an attempt to rectify the problem. Sticking up notices saying sorry for the inconvenience is just not good enough!

Dear John,
Firstly may we say thank you for this fantastic initiative to clean up City of Johannesburg.
At the end of Jackal Street in Kensingto is the entrance to a large open piece of veld that runs between the properties along a substantial section of Juno and King Edward Streets. It is very sheltered almost at the base of the valley, and has a massive amount of birdlife. I think it would be an amazing place/park/bird sanctuary if it were cleared by the municipality of the long grass and litter that has gone unchecked for years. We all know that Joburg needs more green spaces, and here is one just sitting in suburbia and needing some attention to turn it into a beautiful assett for all to enjoy. If it were cleared it would be a place where families could go for walks or picnics or just to birdwatch.
We heard someone on your show about a week ago requesting that an area in their suburb be declared a park, so maybe the same process could be followed here. I would not know where to begin, but since you have given us the venue to put forward our suggestions, we hope you will be able to help.
Thank you once again for a fabulous show and this thoughtful initiative.
We love our suburb and would be thrilled if something positive should come out of this communication.
Yours sincerely,
Melanie Botha.

Dear John,
I am a UK citizen who occasionally comes to South Africa on business. One thing that has struck me as a serious oversight, and may well strike the many visitors you will have in 2010, is the almost total absence of road planning that meets the needs of pedestrians and cyclists.
On many of the roads I travel on in town, I see no pavement at all (so we have to pick our way through the mud), and I have never seen a cycle lane anywhere. Even the pedestrian crossings are designed dangerously, as they show the green man at the same time as the green light for turning cars, which is simply crazy.
Most cities in the world are desperately trying to improve their infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, and thereby reduce traffic and pollution, but not here – why? Is it a hangover from apartheid thinking, where if you are poor and therefore not in a car, you are invisible? The majority of South Africans do not have a car, so why are the road planners only catering to the wealthy minority? For health and environmental reasons they should be encouraging less car use and more walking and cycling, by making it safer and easier.
In this regard Pretoria and Jo’burg really stand out as examples of bad practice – even amidst all the current roadworks no thought seems to have been given to what pedestrians and cyclists need, which is such a missed opportunity. Your planners should be trying to emulate forward-thinking cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, not re-creating a polluted and traffic-clogged London of the 1970’s. London itself is now trying to rectify its past mistakes, and is installing cycle lanes and safe walking routes for the 2012 olympics.
I have never heard this issue discussed on your radio station or anywhere else in South Africa – isn’t it about time you started holding politicians and planners to account for this: can the silent majority count on you to be their voice?
Thanks, and keep up the good work,
Patrick,
London

Outside our home the road is in a bad way. Our address is 123 Buckingham Ave, Craighall Park, 2196. Previously the council dumped some sand and stones over the area which has subsequently come out. The recent widening of the section of the M7 road (which continues from Barry Hertzog) north to south along the Telkom premises at the intersection (T junction)of 17th street and Solomon street( between Enogh Satonga and Solomon streets)in Brammfontien has a huge pot hole at the storm water drain. This pot hole started as a depression caused by heavy vehicles braking at the intersection. This section of road works was completed about two months ago and a brand new section of road has already failed. This indicates that the construction was poorly done as the ground was not compacted sufficiently to be able to support the load on the surface, furthermore the newly painted roadmarks are already dull and faded. The JHB. municipality can’t assist in clearing the mud, because all their equipment or heavy machinery is damaged and there is no funds to have it repaired. All the residents who make use of this road constantly try to at least get the excess silt removed and the road graded, but our attempts fall on deaf ears! any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

505 Reier Rd, Northriding is not tarred despite the developer, Mr Rocksburgh having paid a substantial deposit when he first developed the area some 15 years ago. Despite promises from our local DA councillor, Ralf Bitkau nothing has materialised and we are fobbed off constantly. There is no storm water drains, our yards are flooded or the sand dams up to such an extent that we often cannot get in through our gates. Aside from this, tyres burst because of the trenches, building material, and not to mention the blind corners or the residents further out who like to use our road as a 4x4 adventure centre, throwing donuts, etc on the dirt road. In winter the dust is unbearable and we all suffer from allergies, not to mention the amount of cleaning and in summer our road becomes almost impassable. Luckily we have the direct number on one of the guys at JRA who will send a grader every now and then, but this is a very short terms solution.
The adjoining roads to ours are not opened as someone has built a house on what is to be part of the road. According to council records this house was demolished years ago - obviously someone was paid off. It is now repossessed by the bank so this is another obstruction to our road being tarred. At the moment we use a servitude through another persons property and go out through the BP Garage - luckily very understanding businessmen who own it. However, this servitude through someone else’s property has now become Dagga Alley as the local drug dealers hide their stash there - despite the Douglasdale police station promising to take a stand - the cops tell me they can never find enough on them to make a proper arrest!

i’ve been living in Reier Road for 7 years now. To date our road has still not been tarred, its a gravel road. We had our share of potholes, bumps, floods etc. The Jhb roads agency keeps informing us that there’s no budget to get our road done, our ward leader gives us the same run around. We dont have lights, proper access to our roads and then to top all this up we have an illegal taxi rank at the end of our street. The residents have gone through many channels to get a committment on when our road will be seen to and we never get any fruitful.

John, is it not time for all South Africans to stand together and start flying the SA flag from their businesses, homes on top of buildings and vehicles etc.... - We have a poor culture of not being patriotic to our flag and I believe this is a perfect opportunity for all South Africans to get behind the Flag and the Bafana team. If never shown and never seen it will never become a culture and I believe that the time is right for South Africans to show the world that we are proud and support not only our team but our country and flag. thanks for your time and the show

Hi John, everyone is concerned about South Africa not having accomodation for the visitors to SA during the World Cup. My suggestion is to the Railways who are well positioned to make use of their sleeper cars to build at the central stations throughtout South Africa a "Rail Car Village" where 2 : 4 : 6 berth accomodation can be provided with the rail kitchens and dining cars being used for meals - these rail villages can be housed at the main Park Station for example in JHB where there is adeqaute bus service that can setup to take people to the stadiums and "official" taxis to take people to any other destinations with the major cities of the country. I am not sure whether we still have these carriages and dining cars that were very popular in the past for trips to Dbn;CT etc.....
I am sure that it would be a great experience for the many train lovers who support football to experience a unique opportunity to be accomodated in semi / luxury rail accomodation that can easily be secured and policed. Maybe a bit late to be thinking of this but I for one would be very keen going to a sports event to be hosted by a Rail company "Rovas Rail" style for my accomodation and meals. Just a thought.

In Bolton Ave (between Bath & Cradock) Rosebank. Every 2 or 3 months a blob of tar is put on the holes. Pressure from the underground leak keeps forcing water through the repairs & also out of the outlet at the pavement/roadside. There are now 4 deep holes in this area they keep doing a patch work job on. Holes are just getting deeper & bigger. Car tyres will be cut as well
and water is going to waste on an ongoing basis.
Have reported this on several occasions.

Dear Mr. Naledzani and others,
Had you informed me that you had no jurisdiction of the office of Mr. Isaac I would not have sent said communique to him.
Your inadvertant misrepresentation of your credentials has brought this sad situation upon us.
However, Sir, Are you able to provide me with the contact detail of an official that would have the authority to clear the bottleneck that persists to hamstring efforts by JRA to fix the roads mentioned in previous emails to yourself?
Your’s faithfully

Sir
I am quite disconcerted with the fact that the SMS you sent to Mr Isaacs regaring the above issue was presented as if it was an instruction from me. If indeed you did that deliberately, it is very disturbing and I would really urge you to desist from doing that in the future. I gave you the details of Mr Isaacs as a way of referring you to the relevant person who may be able to assist you.

I have tried unsuccessfully since July this year to have the faulty streetlight opposite my property repaired.
I firstly reported it to The Bryanston East Community Forum:
"You logged a call with Ilse on 15 July 2009.
She contacted CityPower and was given a reference number: 1897669737
I contacted them again this morning and spoke to Melissa who logged the complaint about the faulty street light again.
Repairs usually take 9 to 14 working days but as they did not adhere to the request previously have been promised that it will be fixed within the next week or so.
Kind regards
Elfrieda Loubser
Bryanston East Community Forum (BECF)"
Nothing happened.
I reported it to City Power (011 375 5555)on August 7th - no result. After this I spoke to City Power 23 times. I then contacted our local councillor, Vincent Earp, and sent him this email:
"Dear Clr Earp,
Faulty streetlight - 16 Wilton Avenue, Bryanston. City Power reference no: 1898555494
I am following up on the ongoing struggle to get City Power to repair the faulty streetlight opposite the entrance to No. 16 Wilton Avenue.
This light has not worked since July. I have reported it to the City Power call centre, and to the technical operations depot (011 793 1105) and contacted them a total of 23 times since August 7th.
I spoke to you on September 15th (and subsequently), and you took up this issue with City Power (the CEO, no less!) who promised to attend to the matter.
Still nothing has happened...
It may seem a minor issue, but as a ratepayer and for the safety of my family it certainly is not, and it should have been sorted out months ago.
I would be grateful if you could follow up and exert some pressure!
Many thanks"
Clr Earp’s reply (11th November):
"Dear David
I will take it up again with City power officials this morning.
Regards
Vincent"
It is now 27th November - the light is still not working!

On Modderfontein road between Wordsworth and Johannesburg roads in Corlett Gardens there is a bridge over a river.
On the side that takes you to Edenvale at the bridge, there is a blocked overflow. Last year there was a half hearted clean up. If this had been done properly then this letter would not be required.
The area that needs to be ’opened up’ is about 10 metres long.

Ref.2785/03 December 2008: (Spoke to Luambo) Complaint: the paving has been uplifted outside the SARS building, corner Hill Street and Kent in Randburg. The problem results in only two people or sometimes just one, being able to walk on the pavement. Usually someone has to step off into the street.
17 April 2009 - Spoke to Mbali who added notes and escalated to JRA.
28 September 2009: Spoke to the Area Manager’s secretary who apologised and did phone me back saying they were looking for the contract workers who last worked on the pavement.
19 November 2009: Spoke to Mr Hendrik van Tonder the Area Manager who said please go to 702.
This problem is not his responsibility. He did not give permission for the road works to be done. Apparently there is a wayleave Form which is to be completed. He cannot bring the pavement back to original condition because of the costs. Various people ie, Neotel, Escom, City Power have all worked on the site, even the owner of the SARS building has complained to him.
I also brought to his attention the state of the streets around Randburg CBD which are a disgrace. There are potholes, large holes which were dug up on the pavements which are so old that trees are even growing out of them. All of the above seemed to be out of his hands

JRA and Johannesburg Housing department seem to be at loggerheads with regard to who is responsible for the repair of raods Adriaan and Kretzschmar in Westbury Johannesburg, it has been a ongoing dispute between these two organisations for the past decade so says JRA agent Patrick Mhlongo(011) 673 1254.
According to Patrick: "Countless quotes have been sent to the Housing Department so as to allow JRA to fix these holes."
Will this turn into another situation where warning signs are ignored and where the community will have to rise in protest and violence to have the services and ultimately the respect they deserve.

We were given the reference number stated hereunder and were told by an operator called Andrew that the problem would be fixed within 7 to 14 days. We followed up on 23/7/09, spoke to Morris who said he would send a reminder to the dept concerned and we would see action within 2 to 3 days. On 3/08/08 we spoke to Jane who said the repair crew would be on site in "2 hours time". No response to this day. The street lighting is still not working. -Provide dedicated taxi-pull-over sections (to prevent illegal stopping to pick-up passengers)
-Creation of a Dedicated traffic light ’flying squad’- give these cars a blue light of some sort & get them to prioritised arterial routes asap after it has been reported. One person serves as the driver who can also direct traffic, upon getting to the scene, while the second person in the car fixes the traffic light. This will save the country millions of rands that are lost due to unproductive time spent being stuck in traffic jams.
If 702 were to sponsor or get sponsership for these cars-it would reflect extremely positive on them, beyond the pointsman programme that they’re allready running :-)

The right flicking arrow travelling north along van Riebeeck into Modderfontein on the centre island was knocked off by a truck a few years ago and has never been replaced; only the straight on arrow is there. This causes great confusion and causes (north-travelling) right-turning traffic to ignore straight only arrow and to turn in front of southbound traffic when light changes, not realising light is still green for southbound traffic. VERY DANGEROUS. Edenvale says it’s Joburg problem; Joburg says it’s Gauteng’s problem and nobody fixes it.

In February 2009 a trench was dug across Troupant Avenue just before it intersects with Witkoppen Rd. It was filled with earth and then just left. Within days it became very deep from the cars compressing the soil into the trench. It got so deep that someone from the nursery over the road filled it with bricks and chunks of tar. Every time it rains the bricks are dislodged or pressed deeper into the ground.
After numerous attempts to call the municipality (phones were not being answered) I wrote a letter to the Fourways Review with a photograph that was published on May 15 2009 hoping this might spur them into action.
I then sent an e-mail to Jenny Crwys-Williams with a photograph on the 27th of May when she was discussing this with someone from the roads agency. She asked the public to submit their reports on potholes etc. At the time, her guest said all complaints would be dealt with within 72 hours.
I eventually got the correct number to call off Jenny’s follow up show and when I finally got through I reported it to a Victoria and received a reference number (225606). This was on the 4th of June 2009. As of today, 5 months after getting this reference number, still nothing has been done about it!! It has become so laughable that I have just given up.

Please can you tar " Tamboti" road in Carlswald, there is a patch that is not tarred and when it rains , the road becomes worse. Also, Carlswald has become a residential area, but there are no street lights or cat eyes on Tamboti or Acacia road. As a female, it is dangerous to drive on these roads without street lights. Many thanks

As a resident of the Wendywood /Gallomanor area, I have become increasingly concerned over the safety of Western Service Road which is a main road on which residences and businesses are situated. The road is frequented by pedestrians especially school children who often have to walk on the road itself because there is no paving or space that would provide a safe pathway to walk. This problem is further compounded by the fact that there are often open drains and the pathway is difficult to navigate during heavy rains. Further, the area alongside Western Service Road is unsightly and neglected. There is no effort to cut the grass and maintain the area’s general upkeep. This does not bode well for a road that experiences high volumes of traffic and that runs parallel to the N1.
I would greatly appreciate that some urgent and serious consideration be given to paving the area alongside Western Service Road as this would contribute greatly to enhancing the safety of this road.

We bought land in Aloe street in Wendywood, Sandton in 1989 where we built our home. At the time Aloe street did not have a tarred road surface – it was just a sand road.
In 1990 the council came and tarred the road but did not do any KERBING on either side of the road.
At the time we were told that because there were still empty stands in the road that the Johannesburg Road agency did not want to build the kerbs until all buildings was finished being built.
Well it is now 20 years later, all buildings have been completed and we still have no kerbing on our road!!!
The road agency comes and fixes potholes now and again but it has never been resurfaced since 1990 and now needs to be resurfaced and have the kerbing done.
Our road just looks so incredible “messy” because there is no kerbing but I do believe that a purpose of the kerbing is also for proper drainage of the road and for safety measures for motorists.
I always pay the City of Johannesburg on time so I feel I have “paid” for this to be done. My account no is 201642907
I have taken some photos which I’m happy to send on should someone give me their email address?

I sent the following request to JRA on 13/10/2009.
I would like to request that the dirt road on the Eastern border of the Diepsloot Nature Reserve (access to Hills and Dales) be graded.
The condition of the road has deteriorated so much that it is almost impossible to drive without a 4x4 vehicle.
From the map, I see that this falls under City of Johannesburg Rural.
Since the recent rains, this road has deteriorated even further and is causing damage to cars.
Please could you ask them when they are going to fix this road
Regards

I was traveling on Mulbarton Road towards William Nicol in the evening and because it was so dark I didn’t see the pot hole at the entrance to Leaping Frog Shopping Centre. There is a steel frame in the pothole which when my wheel went into the pothole my rim got bent in the process. It has been 2 weeks now and the pot hole is still there. I have taken a photo of the pot hole should you wish for me to email it to someone. I als drove passed yesterday and there are about 5 hub caps lying on the road near this pot hole.

There are potholes in 7th Road close to the corner of 8th Road near the entrance of Adcock Ingram in Erand AH.
There is a HUGE pot hole on the corner of 7th Road and Milford Road in Halfway Gardens.
There are several potholes in Harry Galaun Street, most of them are between the intersections of Le Roux Avenue and Berger Road.
There is a large heap of sand that washed into the road, it is blocking one lane, in Hary Galaun Street close to the intersection with Allandale Road.
The storm water drains on New Road and Walton Road in Carlswald are broken and blocked
Trust you will be able to attend to these road hazards.

Robot at the intersection of Kitchener Avenue and Third Street has not been working for a week now and reported on the 03rd December 2009. To date no progress in reparing this. The robot not working is a nightmare for us residents who have our driveways linked to Kitchener Ave and the drivers not stopping means we risk our lives daily entering and leaving our homes. At least put up temporary STOP signs warning and informing drivers to stop while the robot is out. Second issue is a street light not working for the last month on the corner of Kitchener Ave and Spanker Street. Reported last week and await repairs.

I am a resident at San Vittoria townhouse complex in Delphinium Street, Winchester Hills.
The road between the various complexes is paved and has repaired on a few occasions but this is not solving the problem as due to traffic and heavy rain the paving bricks constantly become dislodged.
We also have a problem in that the motorists using the road travel at high speed and occasionally veer off the road. On one occasion we have had to repair the wall to the complex and most recently one motorist uprooted a tree adjacent to wall. During peak hour traffic it sometimes becomes a mission impossible to exit the complex as motorists travel at high speed and you have to wait for several minutes before you can gain access to the road.
I would really appreciate your assistance and support to have:
The road surface tarred and
To have speed humps installed on the road

This is a very busy/dangerous road, the accident statistics should give you an indication of this
I would like to bring the following to you attention:
Robots under/near the N1 Highway and Hendrik Potgieter Bridges are forever not working properly, including the turning arrows.
The road in falling away near an area where they repaired a leaking pipe at the Sophia Road circle (at the Spar) – this has been like this for a very long time
At the 14th Ave & Davidson Street intersection, we need either a circle or stop sign. I stay in a cul de sac and you have to take your life into your hands when you try to push in front of an oncoming car – this is the only way we can access 14th Ave. A hotel has now been built in the cul de sac which makes it even more difficult with the extra traffic.
There are a few pot holes in 14th Ave which need to be repaired. Road signs are also either broken or not eligible. A manhole on the corner of Davidson & 14th Ave is open – needs a lid.
Sidewalks are extremely dirty - Please Please, I love the area in which I live but it really needs some attention

This is a busy intersection and when the lights are out my travel time almost doubles. As per my ususal experiance once I got through I was put on hold while music played. I have now been on hold for 12 minutes and have terminated the call. JRA used to have a dedicated call center menu, like Joburg water and Pikitup, whay was that discontinued? The Joburg Connect number will not work if nobody botheres to pick up the phone.
