He was cofounder of the United Democratic Front and a leading opponent of apartheid in South Africa and continues to be a spiritual and political force. From an early age he developed his twin interests of religion and politics. Having always wanted to be a minister, Boesak at age 14 became a sexton in the Dutch Reformed Church. He reminisces about his life. Ron Clarke discusses the process of writing his book and palaeoanthropology. He made a significant contribution to the work on the Laetoli footprints in Tanzania. He has made innovative use of casts in palaeoanthropology. He has supervised Sterkfontein since taking over from Alun Hughes in1991. In 1993 he collaborated with Lee Berger in a paper which suggested that the Taung Child skull had been transported by a large eagle, probably a Crowned Eagle, which was the likely cause of the child’s death.
