702 FINDS BIGGEST BRAIN IN JOBURG

Wednesday, 4 April 2007

It's official: when it comes to brains, Joburg has the biggest and best!

That was the outcome of Talk Radio 702's second successful Brain of Joburg competition, in which the station - together with Business Connexion - scanned the province for clever, quick-thinking listeners.

Essentially a general knowledge quiz competition, the Brain of Joburg pitted listeners against each other live on-air in 60-second rounds, with the daily winners participating in the live quarter-final rounds each week at designated shopping centres.

These weekly winners recently battled it out at Cresta Shopping Centre in the semi-final round, which was eventually won by Shaun Goodbrand - who actually entered the competition as a wild card entry from the public gallery that day.

Not only did Goodbrand walk away with R15 000 in cash and the title of Brain of Joburg, but he also scooped Cape Town live, on-air, this past Monday in the ultimate play-off between the two cities, earning himself a further R20 000 and the title of Brain of Brains.

"Brain of Joburg is fast becoming a firm favourite with our listeners, who pride themselves on being well-informed and in the know. It's also a direct reflection of our positioning as 'Your No. 1 News and Talk Station'," said Talk Radio 702 station manager, Pheladi Gwangwa. "As with last year's competition, hundreds of listeners registered to get in on the action - everyone from teachers, journalists and business managers, right through to professors and even a nuclear reactor mechanical designer."

Listeners also turned out in their droves at the various shopping centres each week to watch the live showdowns between the contestants as well as meet their favourite Talk Radio 702 hosts.

According to Gwangwa, listener response to the Brain of Joburg has been very positive. "We received such great feedback after the competition via our sms and e-mail channels, with listeners saying the promotion was both informative and entertaining," she explained. "The same competition was run on our sister station, 567 CapeTalk with the Brain of Cape Town taking on the Brain of Joburg in the final round. Our listeners were most happy that this year's ultimate title was won by the Joburg winner!"

Brain of Joburg 2007 follows on from last year's successful inaugural competition, which was won, in the end, by 567 CapeTalk's Brain of Cape Town.
