WHITFIELD NAMED FINANCIAL JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR

Friday, 16 May 2008

Bruce Whitfield, host of the business radio show, The World at Six, broadcast on Talk Radio 702 and 567 CapeTalk, was last night named the Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year for 2007.

Whitfield also won the Broadcast Media category of the Awards for the second year running and was shortlisted in three categories for the print media. In 2005 he won a special award for general all-round performance. Professor Anton Harber, convener of the adjudicators, said that radio had become an important and hotly-contested medium for financial journalism. “In this, Bruce has shown consistent quality of reporting, with well-informed and probing questioning of a range of business figures.

He always keeps up-to-date, knows his subject and is a pleasure to listen to. We particularly note examples where he has not just reacted to news but with research and preparation has defined an important story,” said Harber. Pheladi Gwangwa, Talk Radio 702 station manager said the award bore testament to Whitfield’s hard work and continuing efforts in striving for excellence within the financial reporting field. “We are delighted with Bruce’s win.

This is the second consecutive year he has won in the broadcast category, which points to his commitment to keeping listeners up to date with all the latest financial news as well as his valued analysis of – and even sometimes investigation into – the day’s big business stories,” added Gwangwa. Whitfield is renowned for his financial reporting on both Talk Radio 702, broadcast in Gauteng, and on 567 CapeTalk, broadcast in Cape Town, as well as his contributions to Finweek and a number of other publications.

This year’s Sanlam Financial Journalist of the Year Awards attracted 101 entries from 52 journalists representing 26 different publications, Internet news services and radio and television stations.
