BUDDING YOUNG ARTISTS GET A BIG BOOST

Wednesday, 31 March, 2010

In a Random Act of Kindness, the Dis-Chem Foundation donated R10 000 for art supplies to three different schools on Jenny Crwys-Williams’ show on Talk Radio 702.

Jenny, who is an avid supporter of the arts, was broadcasting live from the Joburg Art Fair on Friday 26th March. The focus on the arts gave her the perfect opportunity to highlight the plight of three schools that are all trying to promote their young artists but don’t have the supplies.

Mpumulelo Primary educates a whopping 2 000 scholars in a disadvantaged community and classes are crammed with up to 70 children. In these circumstances, the school is very aware of the role the arts play in helping the children to express themselves. They are encouraged to draw and paint and make sculptures but they don’t have enough supplies to go around.

Delrado Primary had also written in to Jenny, they too put a lot of emphasis on the arts and enter their budding artists in numerous art competitions, but unfortunately they have run out of watercolours.

Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf has a number of learners who battle academically due to their hearing impairments, but they find that they are able to express themselves through art. Their problem is that they have no facilities on site and the learners have to travel to an art centre nearby.

Fortunately for all three schools, the Dis-Chem Foundation understands the importance of the arts, especially as a form of expression for young people. Dis-Chem Foundation trustee, Lynette Saltzman, was happy to announce that they will be donating R10 000 to each of these schools to help them develop their art departments.

“Who knows, one day we may see one of these young artists here at the Art Fair,” said Jenny.
This was just one of many Random Acts of Kindness that the Dis-Chem Foundation and Talk Radio 702 have facilitated and will continue to do so.
