LIGHT A CANDLE FOR MADIBA

Friday, 28 January, 2011

Lead SA, the Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane and prominent South Africans are calling on the nation to show their support for former President Nelson Mandela by lighting a candle from midnight this Saturday.

“Lead SA is proud to form a partnership with various role players and together we call on civil society, religious groups of all denominations, politicians and businessmen to stand up, show their compassion and encouragement by lighting a candle at midnight on Saturday as a symbol of hope,” said Lead SA’s Yusuf Abramjee.

The last few days have seen the world focus its attention on the country’s beloved icon and the father of our nation, Nelson Mandela. The nation held up its hope as the former President was admitted to hospital, and we heaved a collective sigh of relief when we heard that he would be returning to his home.

“I am so happy to hear that the father of this great nation has been discharged from hospital,” said Gauteng Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane. “I pray to the Almighty that he gets well soon and I will be lighting a candle this Saturday to wish him well.

I would like to encourage others to do the same. Madiba deserves all the love and care that we are able to give him,” she said.

As Madiba recovers at home, the family has humbly asked that all South Africans continue to show him their support.

“I will light a candle, and as Mandela quoted, in so doing I will be allowing others to do the same,” said Gwen Mahlangu, Minister of Public Works. “We are all better off today because of Mandela’s legacy. I would like to encourage everyone to celebrate his life and remember what he has done for this country and its people.”

From midnight this Saturday, whether you are at home, at work or gathering with friends, we would like to encourage you to light a candle for our national icon as a symbol of hope and encouragement.

“I am happy to hear that Madiba is with his family and it is encouraging to know the children of his country are wishing him well. I would also like to plead with the nation to respect the family and I call on everyone to do something that will honour his legacy and make our country grow higher and higher,” said Bathabile Dlamini, Minister of Social Development.

Close friend and former assistant to Nelson Mandela, Jessie Duarte is fully behind this call to action. “It’s the nation’s duty to Madiba,” she said.

Moegsien Williams, editor of The Star said, “This may just be a small gesture but its importance is immeasurable and I call on the nation to support it.”

Lead SA calls on you to do your bit and support this call for unity in our country. Get well Madiba.
