As we count down to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in June, 94.7 Highveld Stereo, Talk Radio 702 and Gold Reef City have set out to give the thousands of Gauteng visitors a truly South African reception with its “Welcome to Jozi” Campaign.
Listeners, soccer supporters, celebrities and sports heroes will have the opportunity to paint part of a large welcoming banner, The Big Picture, which will be replicated and hoisted onto billboards across the city for the entire world to see.
“As a media company, it’s our responsibility to get people excited about the World Cup. We want to inspire the public to take part and really get involved,” said promotions manager of Primedia Broadcasting, Simon Parkinson.
“We’re thrilled to be part of this inspiring campaign,” said Steve Hight, General Manager of Gold Reef City Casino. “The partnership with 94.7 and 702 was a very natural match, as both radio stations and Gold Reef City have the same thing in common – being a part of everyday Jozi life and a proudly South African supporter of the World Cup coming to Jozi and South Africa. We hope that all supporters of the campaign are left with a sense of pride that lasts long after the event is over.”
The fun filled celebrations will take part every Saturday for four consecutive weeks starting on 15 May, with the final reveal taking place on Wednesday, 9 June at Gold Reef City. The public will be able to make their mark between 09h00 and 12h00 on 15 May at Jeppe High School for Boys, 22 May at Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, 29 May at Gold Reef City Theme Park Parking lot and 5 June at Woodmead Retail Park.
As supporters make their mark, Talk Radio 702’s David O’Sullivan and 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Rude Awakening will be hosting a special one hour show while the other presenters interact with visitors and test their soccer skills in a number of activities including “Beat the keeper”, “3vs3” matches and playing the latest soccer-themed PS3 games. Tons of prizes will be up for grabs.
Gold Reef City’s Diski/Tribal dancers will also be showing off their moves and while appetites are worked up, braaied boerewors rolls will be sponsored and sold by Weber. All money raised by the selling of the boerewors rolls will be donated to Roots2Shoots, a charity that provides free weekly football programmes and social skills to enrich the lives of underprivileged kids from Alexandra, Soweto, Eldoradopark and Kathlaong.
“We’re creating a truly South African celebration,” said Parkinson. “We really want people to relax and get into the World Cup spirit over the next few Saturdays.”
Once the welcome banner has been completed, it will be housed within Gold Reef City Theme Park, while replicas of The Big Picture are spread across Gauteng.
Entrance to the Theme Park on 29 May will be offered at a not-to-be-missed, discounted rate of R100 per adult and R60 per child under 1.2 metres before 12h00.
