It's May which can only mean one thing in Joburg: it's time for Talk Radio 702's ever-popular Mother's Day Concert at the Zoo, presented by BP Express.
Now in its sixteenth year, the Mother's Day Concert at the Zoo is an annual highlight on the city's events calendar. It attracts families from all corners of Johannesburg and Pretoria who come to spoil their moms for the day, picnicking on the lawns and enjoying the sounds of the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra.
"The Mother's Day Concert at the Zoo is a firm favourite with our listeners and we're happy to once again present this fun-filled family event with sponsor BP Express," explained Talk Radio 702 station manager, Pheladi Gwangwa. "The event garners such huge support because it provides people with an opportunity to get out of the house for the day and into the autumn sun, where they can spend time with friends and family in a safe and secure environment."
In keeping with tradition, the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra will perform a range of timeless classics as well as a selection of current, popular tunes under the experienced baton of renowned orchestra leader and conductor, Richard Cock.
In addition, three soloists have been lined up in the form of internationally-trained opera singer, Lionel Mkhwanazi;award-winning R&B singer Loyiso Bala; and the hugely talented Samantha Peo, hot off the stage from playing Millie in the Broadway and West End hit musical, 'Thoroughly Modern Mille'.
"While the day is all about mom and saying thanks to her, we haven't forgotten about the kiddies," added Gwangwa. "Aside from the selection of musical treats we've lined up for them, this year we'll also feature a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired supervised play area, where kids can play on a massive pirate ship, participate in sword- and boat hat-making workshops and dress up in full pirate regalia."
The event will also provide visitors with the opportunity to give something back to the community, as a collection will be hosted for clothes, blankets and non-perishable foods, which will be donated to charity.
Gates open at 09:00 on Mother's Day (Sunday, 13 May 2007), with the programme kicking off at 12:00 and ending at around 15:00.
Tickets are R20.00 per person (free entrance for children under three) and are available at the Zoo gates on the day. All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Johannesburg Zoological Gardens. Secure parking will be available at the Zoo itself and across the road at Zoo Lake.
