ENTRIES OPEN FOR DISCOVERY 702 WALK THE TALK

Monday, 7 April, 2008

It’s bigger than the London, Boston and New York Marathons. It’s four times bigger than the Comrades and it’s the biggest walking event in Africa.

It can only be the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk and entries for this year’s event are officially open.

On Sunday, 27 July, 2008, thousands of walkers will gather at Marks Park Sports Club to participate in Joburg’s best loved walking event.

This year the walk has taken on a new spin with the introduction of 30 and 15-kilometre timed events for the more experienced walker.

The 8km walk will again be open for all corporates, clubs, families and friends; as will the 5km fun walk along a safe secure route for children, junior walkers, prams, dogs on leashes, the disabled and pensioners. Discovery Vitality members will receive 3000 Vitality points when completing the 5km, 8km and 15km walks, and 5000 Vitality points when completing the 30km walk.

R10 from every 5km and 8km entry will be donated to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Discovery is the founding member of the South African arm of Laureus Sport for Good Foundation – which uses sport to bring about positive social change.

Hylton Kallner, Discovery chief marketing officer, said, “This event epitomises good health and community building. It allows the people of Johannesburg the opportunity to spend quality time with their families while doing a healthy, activity, and we're proud to be associated with it.”

The Discovery 702 Walk the Talk – now in its eighth year – has grown from strength to strength. The first event took place in 2 000 with 12 000 entrants. By 2006 with a revamped and restructured Discovery 702 Walk the Talk 30 000 walkers took part, and last year a record 40 000 participants joined in the fun.

“The event has revolutionised the way Joburger’s see fitness, family, fun and friendship,” said Talk Radio 702 station manager, Pheladi Gwangwa. “It epitomises good health and community building and has received an overwhelmingly positive response in the past from not only members of the public but also local celebrities, media and Governmental figures.”

Permission has been granted by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department for the event, which has also been sanctioned by Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Councillor Amos Masondo. The City of Joburg – a world-class African City – is hosting the Discovery 702 Walk the Talk, and is a proud partner of the event, which showcases the city’s ability to stage sporting events of this stature.

Walkers can collect entry forms at Virgin Active, Planet Fitness, Cape Union Mart, Run Walk for Life and various shopping centres across Gauteng.
