Eleanor presents The Band Stand on Saturday night from 7pm to 10pm.
When I was seventeen “It Was A Very Good Year” – so goes the song made famous in the 60s by Frank Sinatra and for me that was so true. I had just started working and was earning my first salary, so as a teenager I had spending power!
On the radio I was listening to the music of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Eddie Cochrane, Petula Clark and Gary Puckett and The Union Gap but I was buying the LPs of music from the Bandstand era. Every weekend in our home my dad would be playing tunes of the Big Bands and we would hear the voices of Shirley Bassey, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald.
The sounds of the Ray Conniff Orchestra and Chorus would permeate every room in the house and unknowingly by osmosis I grew to love it all and many years and many salaries later I am still happily spending on CDs to further increase my collection, only now I’m privileged to be able to share it on Saturday evenings!
Like many of the listeners, the music of the Bandstand era is the music of my childhood and it brings back warm and wonderful memories. |

Stand by, then, for the sequel: ‘Winter Jazz Concert’! One of the special features of this jazz event, is that the music spills right out of the theatre. By that we mean that the fun begins as you step into the foyer, as the popular jazz pianist and singer Neal Robertson will be in the foyer from 4.30pm to warm up audiences with his own special brand of music while they stock up with refreshments.
Then, at 5pm, the Metro Jazz Ensemble will take to the stage. After interval, it’s the turn of the award-winning South African pianist Roland Moses who, along with the Roland Moses Quartet, will be the backing band for Denise Jannah, the jazz artist from the Netherlands who’s been setting international jazz festivals afire with her passionate vocalising.
Ms Jannah, who was born in Suriname, South America, moved to Holland with her family in the late 1970s. There, she studied music and singing. After she won a major international singing competition in 1989, her career shot into orbit. A born jazz singer with a unique voice, Ms. Jannah has many CD recordings to her credit, and has done lots of radio, stage and TV work, in addition to her festival appearances. This is a jazz event that you can’t afford to miss!

The Big Band Musical Appreciation Society
The Society meets on the second Sunday afternoon of each month in St Johns College, Houghton, Johannesburg, and their secretary, Barney Segal, can be contacted for any information on 011 615 3412.
The society was formed in the 1990’s and housed in Sable House in Braamfonteirn, before moving four years ago to their present location at the Jeffrey Auditorium in Houghton. Their chairman, Jack Mink, has emphasized the need for younger members to join the society. Their motto is “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got swing” and this describes exactly the music that is either shown on videos or DVD’s at their meetings, or is played from CD’s. Music collectors and speakers, such as Don Albert and Harry Fidler, will often give informative talks on the music of the 30’s and 40’s, and showcase those talks with slides and shows form their own personal collections.
A tea is served during the afternoon and is a chance for like-minded musicians and those with a love of Big Band music to get together and reminisce.
The Society meets on the second Sunday afternoon of each month in St Johns College, Houghton, Johannesburg, and their secretary, Barney Segal, can be contacted for any information on 011 615 3412. |
