This too shall pass: A Word On Psychology

Dr Colinda Linde was in studio to discuss the psychology inherent to dealing with change and impermanence. We had messages about loss in the form of divorce or simply the ending of a long term relationship. Another caller recently lost her husband, who passed away. Then there was also the challenge presented by a broken leg to an elderly listener, who messaged in. Or an unexpected pregnancy, which one listener wanted to share with us. Overall Dr Linde, with some help from listeners, managed to provide hope and positivity to take away with you.

How to rearrange your brain

Clinical psychologist Mark Kahn was in the studio taking on for an open line. Callers came at him with the hurt of being cheated on (and spent quite a lot of time on the phenomenon of cheating), the feeling of being unsafe after a break-in and the post-traumatic stress-like condition one caller found himself in after having witnessed a lot of animal abuse. Mark also dipped his toes into finding meaning in life and the supposed imminent end of the world according to the Mayan calendar.

Invest in your relationship

Relationship expert Ian Lipman talked us through how to navigate the holidays with your relationship intact. Especially for couples with children, a lot of pressure is placed on the relationship during the holidays and people assume they can make up for a year of neglect. Ian refers to this as a “binge” which cannot succeed – almost without fail the holiday experience cannot live up to your expectations. Also, we are too distracted by the children and other family members. During the show Ian informed listeners how to prioritise their relationship and many callers agreed that your relationship should come first, throwing in their advice on how to achieve that.

Talking to kids about HIV

HIV is a disease felt by the whole family, and many parents and caregivers still struggle with knowing when to tell children that they have the disease. Nataly Woollett from the WRHI and Leigh discussed how HIV is still unique in the class of chronic diseases, which needs to be destigmatised. Nataly gave empathetic advice on how to disclose to a child, how to prepare yourself since you cannot prepare the child but only guide them through the process. She reassured listeners that it’s never too late to tell them. Getting this right will affect how the child relates to the disease and eventually how they will disclose to others close to them. Some time was also spent on disclosure in romantic relationships.
