Western Cape covid update with Alan Winde

27 November 2020 7:41 AM

The Western Cape is officially dealing with a resurgence of COVID-19.

Premier Alan Winde joins Kfm Mornings to shed light on the growing number of COVID-19 infections and hospitalisations.

"Numbers are climbing"

"We've got a season coming, we've asked the country and parts of the world to come and visit us this summer season to keep our economy going and so we need to flatten this curve as quickly as we can"

"It's about those events, it's about those office parties, it's actually about Black Friday... it's not a bargain standing in a close queue and picking up COVID-19"

On hospitals in Western Cape

"That's the number to watch... Why did we go into lockdown? To get our health response ready"

"For the last two months, we sat at around 500 infections in our hospitals, and 4 days ago we went to 850, then three days ago to 904, then we went to 962 and last night we hit 1020... now that's going the wrong way"

What is the likelihood of another lockdown?

"If we look at the Northern Hemisphere, they all went back into lockdown. Now that is the last thing that I want"

"Everything we do now must be let's avoid a lockdown, and that's why it's important because no one want's a lockdown"

"Our economy cannot afford a lockdown. And especially going into this season."

"The small sacrifice of wearing a mask and social distancing and not planning that massive big office year-end party, those sacrifices acts as how we as citizens in the Southern tip of Africa  can hold our head up high"

Alan Winde said that he would meet with Cabinet on Friday to discuss what practical solutions could be implemented, specifically where numbers were high.
