Khayelitsha man represents at International Lung Conference

Guest : Goodman Mhakanda

A Khayeltisha resident and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB)
survivor recently attended the 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health in
India. The Lung Conference is the largest annual meeting focusing on issues around
tuberculosis and is attended by delegates from more than 125 countries.
Goodman spoke at some of the sessions including the important opening session. He
joins us tonight his experience suffering from MDR-TB and his treatment journey.
He even lost a part of his lung due to TB. His type-2 diabetes, diagnosed in 2008,
significantly complicated the management of his TB treatment.
Goodman was cured of DR-TB in 2017 but after an arduous TB journey. He walked a
longer and more varied treatment journey than most people – in total four years from
his diagnosis to his cure, in contrast to the span of traditional treatment, which can last
anything from 9 to 24 months.
