Chris Gibbons

Chris anchors The Midday Report, a hard-hitting news, current affairs and business show, broadcast everyday between 12 and one on Talk Radio 702 and 567 Cape Talk. He has been presenting this version of the show since 2001, but his association with Radio 702 started on its very first day on-air back in June 1980, when he anchored the station's first sportscast. Chris is a veteran of news and talk radio in South Africa and has won numerous awards for his work. He has also worked for the BBC, ABC, NBC and Australia's Maquarie Network.

What did you want to be when you were little?

An actor.

What soothes you?

Johnnie Walker Black Label.

What irks you?

The poor service/couldn't-care-less attitude in so many SA restaurants.

Is there a book you read that changed your life?

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy - which introduced me to the Napoleonic era.

The music you listen to most often?

Miles Davis, Diana Krall, Josef Haydn.

Who would you go to the ends of the earth for?

My wife and sons.

Who is your greatest source of inspiration?

William Shakespeare.

Do you have any 'show off' coffee table books in your home?

None - under the coffee table is reserved for our Scottish Terrier pup, Maggie, who sleeps there in a giant ceramic fruit bowl!

Ever been left speechless on the air?

Not live - but I was pre-recording an interview about the oil price and the structure of the government subsidy to Sasol with its then-chairman, Paul Kruger. I put my first question to him and there was a short pause, after which he said,

Who is the one person you would love to interview, but haven't yet had the pleasure?

Jacob Zuma - (but he's ducked numerous requests - so draw your own conclusions!)
